In the aftermath of underdog Glenn Youngkin winning the Virginia governorship, NBC News’ liberal anchor Chuck Todd is warning Democrats that they are in “grave danger” of losing their narrow control over Congress in the November 2022 midterm elections.
“Republicans are partying like it’s 2009,” he admitted on his Sunday morning TV show.
While praising Biden for finally getting the massive “bipartisan” infrastructure bill over the line in the U.S. House, with the help of 13 Republicans, the Meet the Press host noted that last Tuesday, Democrats Terry McAuliffe (who lost to GOP standard-bearer Youngkin) and Gov. Phil Murphy substantially underperformed Joe Biden’s 2020 margins of victory in Virginia and New Jersey, respectively.
In his opening commentary this morning on a Beltway echo chamber show that hardly anyone watches, Todd also asked himself and answered a series of questions about what he described as a “Democratic drubbing.”
“So what happened to Democrats on Tuesday goes far beyond the defeat of Terry McAuliffe in Virginia or Governor Murphy’s narrow escape in New Jersey. If you look at it from coast to coast, it was a warning to Democrats that their congressional majorities are in grave danger….

“So what happened? Was the standoff between progressives and moderates partly to blame? Probably. Did President Biden misread his mandate? Many Democrats think he did. Was the public’s sense that the country was on the wrong track a factor? Clearly…
“Still, as Democrats pick through the rubble of Tuesday’s election, Republicans are partying like it’s 2009. Remember that year. It was one year before they ended up flipping 63 Democratic House seats…After a devastating loss for Democrats in Virginia and a surprising nail-biter in New Jersey, Democrats are sounding alarm bells, worried a toxic national environment could cost them control of Congress…next year,” Todd added.
He then played a soundbite of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy who opined that “if you’re a Democrat, and President Biden won your seat by 16 points, you’re in a competitive race next year. You are no longer safe.”
The betting markets currently favor a GOP takeover in 2022.
Incidentally, Jack Cittarelli, the GOP hopeful against Murphy in New Jersey, has not yet conceded. “No one should be declaring victory, or conceding the election until every legal vote is counted,” he said in a Twitter video message.

According to New York Post columnist Miranda Devine, “looming over every ballot, was Biden’s disastrous presidency. Soaring gas prices, inflation, supply-chain shortages, rising crime, out-of-control illegal migration and the botched withdrawal from Afghanistan are just a few of the self-inflicted debacles the president seems stubbornly determined to ignore.”
As alluded to by Todd, the GOP, for example, won various elections across the country, including for various key offices in blue New York. Republican Ann Davison even won the city attorney election in progressive Seattle against a far-left opponent.
The longtime Democrat senate president in New Jersey may have also lost to a GOP challenger, a truck driver who is a newcomer to politics, and who spent very little on the campaign, although the former has yet to concede.
Todd did not mention that Democrats from Biden on down seemed to disproportionately focus on ex-President Donald Trump rather than candidate Youngkin (and now Lt. Gov.-elect Winsome Sears) in the Virginia contest without gaining any traction.

Yascha Mounk, a writer for the liberal Atlantic magazine, has called out the Democrats’ failed strategy of playing the semantics card over whether divisive critical race theory is taught in public schools, explaining, in part:
Youngkin capitalized on a widespread public perception that Democrats are out of tune with the country on cultural issues. In doing so, he demonstrated that Republicans who attack identity politics without embracing Trump’s extremist rhetoric can be highly competitive in purple and even solidly blue states…
But the one option [by Democrats] that is both intellectually dishonest and electorally disastrous is to insist on a verbal trick unworthy of a middle-school debate team: to keep claiming that widespread concern over these ideas is misguided because the term by which they have publicly come to be known technically applies to an academic research program rather than the lessons that real children are being taught in real schools. And yet, this is precisely what McAuliffe and so many others attempted to do—with disastrous results—over the closing months of his campaign…
It is impossible to win elections by telling voters that their concerns are imaginary. If Democrats keep doing so, they will keep losing.
