The ACLU reacted to President Biden not being familiar with his own Justice Department’s actions after he called a claim that his administration intends to pay illegal immigrants separated at the border $450,000 each a “garbage” report.

But ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero appeared to contradict Biden on the issue, indicating that the plan to pay vast amounts of money to illegal immigrants separated from their families at the border under the Trump administration is still proceeding. The payments were first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

“President Biden may not have been fully briefed about the actions of his very own Justice Department as it carefully deliberated and considered the crimes committed against thousands of families separated from their children as an intentional governmental policy,” Romero noted in a statement just hours after Biden was questioned on the matter.

“But if he follows through on what he said, the President is abandoning a core campaign promise to do justice for the thousands of separated families,” he asserted. “We respectfully remind President Biden that he called these actions ‘criminal’ in a debate with then-President Trump and campaigned on remedying and rectifying the lawlessness of the Trump administration. We call on President Biden to right the wrongs of this national tragedy.”

Biden’s angry response came after Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy cornered him on the subject Wednesday.

“Mr. President, as you’re leaving for your overseas trip, there were reports that were surfacing that your administration is planning to pay illegal immigrants who are separated from their families at the border,” Doocy asked. “Up to $450,000 each, possibly a million dollars per family. Do you think that that might incentivize more people to come over illegally?”

“If you guys keep sending that garbage out? Yeah, but it’s not true,” Biden tersely responded.

“So this is a garbage report?” Doocy asked Biden.

“Yeah, OK,” the President replied. “That’s not going to happen.”

The Wall Street Journal reported last week that the Departments of Justice, Homeland Security, and Health and Human Services “are considering payments that could amount to close to $1 million a family” for illegal immigrants detained during the Trump administration.

“President Biden has agreed that the family separation policy is a historic moral stain on our nation that must be fully remedied,” Lee Gelernt, who is the deputy director of the ACLU immigrant-rights division, told the media outlet at the time. “That remedy must include not only meaningful monetary compensation, but a pathway to remain in the country.”

The total amount paid out could reach close to $1 billion in order to settle lawsuits filed over the separations. The ACLU represents some of the families separated at the border in pending litigation.

“ACLU” trended on social media after Romero insinuated that Biden doesn’t know what is going on in his own administration:
