Florida Rep wraps up House floor speech with ‘Let’s go Brandon’, with no end in sight for terse term

A Florida Republican ended a floor speech on Thursday with a phrase popularly known as a replacement for a more derogatory saying applicable to President Joe Biden.

“People are understandably frustrated. Actually, they’re very angry. And they’re not going to sit back and take it much longer,” Rep. Bill Posey said, ending his speech with, “Let’s go, Brandon” — meant to replace “F**k Joe Biden.”

The cleaner version was popularized by critics of the president after an NBC Sports reporter appeared to misunderstand what was being shouted in the stands following a NASCAR race when she was interviewing the race winner, Brandon Brown. The crowd was chanting “F**k Joe Biden,” according to video posted online, but she mistook it for “Let’s go, Brandon!”

The ‘Joe Biden’ chant has been repeated numereous times over the past couple of months at college football games and other venues, according to clips posted on social media.

Other Republicans appear to be making political hay with the phrase as well.

Others see the administration angling to make the phrase ‘politically incorrect.’

But there has also been commercial success regarding “Let’s go, Brandon,” namely in the form of a rap tune by Loza Alexander, which rocketed to the No. 1 spot on Apple iTunes’ Hip Hop Top 40 list after it was released last week.

Overall, Biden’s popularity has been in a nosedive for months, accelerating rapidly following the deadly, chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan at the end of August. As of this writing, his average approval rating at RealClearPolitics is 42.7 percent compared to a disapproval average of 51.3 percent.

There are a number of issues working against Biden as well, including inflationary pressures that are leading to soaring gas and energy prices, higher food and clothing costs, and wage stagnation after they had risen, on average, during former President Donald Trump’s term.

On the economy, the RCP average of polls finds Biden underwater again; just 41.6 percent approve of his handling of the economy while 52.3 percent disapprove.

But in terms of how Americans feel regarding the direction of the country — which could also help explain the soaring popularity of Alexander’s song and the continued derogatory chanting of Biden at football games and other venues — just 32 percent believe it is headed in the right direction versus 60.8 percent who said it is headed in the wrong direction.

Other policies are taking their toll on Biden’s popularity as well. His COVID-19 vaccine mandate remains hugely unpopular in many parts of the country, and his energy policies deemphasizing oil and gas exploration, which many believe have led to current high prices for gas and heating oil, are hitting American wage earners like a hidden tax.

Also, illegal immigration, which has gotten out of hand during Biden’s tenure, remains a top concern for Americans according to most polling.

In a new Quinnipiac University poll released this week, the economy, COVID-19, and illegal immigration — in that order — were the top three concerns among most Americans.

“What worries Republicans most does not top the list of Democratic concerns, and vice versa,” said Quinnipiac polling analyst Tim Malloy in a statement that accompanied the results. “But for the country as a whole, the state of the economy edges out the pandemic and issues at the border as the matter of greatest concern.”

Biden is also losing out among the vital Independents; just 28 percent give him good job approval versus 56 percent who don’t.
