FDNY piglet mascot shares warning that New York could lose half its firefighters because of vaccine mandate
Penny the teacup piglet, who is the adorable mascot for FDNY Engine 239 and an Instagram star that lives at a Brooklyn firehouse, shared a flyer that warned New York City could lose half of its firefighters due to the November 1 vaccine mandate in the city.
In bold red lettering, the flyer states, “Attention NYC Residents: Did you know almost half of the FDNY is about to get laid off because of the mandates? How will this affect YOU?”
“The NYC Fire Department responds to almost 600,000 fire incidents each year. That is 1,635 incidents PER DAY,” the flyer informed New Yorkers, according to the Daily Mail. “Every month 606 of your fellow New Yorkers are INJURED at fires. The majority of all fire and medical calls that take place each day are in COMMUNITIES OF COLOR.”
“The city is planning on closing firehouses WHERE YOU LIVE. There will be 3,500 less firefighters protecting the city starting November 1st,” it added. “What does this mean? If you have to call 911 for your family member having a heart attack, or your home starting to burn down, the Fire Department WON’T BE ABLE TO COME.”
“We’ve served you the entire pandemic and we want to keep serving you! Call your elected officials, call the local news, let them know you stand with us,” the flyer concluded.
The media is claiming that in excess of 70 percent of the FDNY’s 17,300 firefighting staff have received at least one COVID shot as of Oct. 29. What it doesn’t say is that a number of those who are vaccinated are reportedly standing with those who are not in solidarity against the mandate.
Penny’s account has over 12,000 followers and is believed to be run by her human FDNY firefighter Darren Harris. He has since deleted the post and he insists that he is not an anti-vaxxer.
“I’m vaccinated and understand the importance of the shot,” Harris told Rolling Stone via an Instagram message. “I just don’t want any firehouses shut down.”
“I’d rather talk about [Penny’s] book,” the firefighter said. “I’m so sorry.”
Normally, Penny’s account posts cute photos of her eating ice cream, painting with her snout, and engaging with the community and children.
Ahead of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Monday deadline, 26 New York firehouses have been forced to shut down because firefighters are refusing to get the jab.
According to the Uniformed Firefighters Association, six stations have closed down in Manhattan, nine in Brooklyn, three in Queens, four in the Bronx, and four in Staten Island due to “no manpower.”
Hundreds of New York City firefighters engaged in a sick-out on Friday instead of bending the knee to de Blasio’s mandate.

Unvaccinated city employees who received their first and second shots after the mandate was announced on October 20 were offered a $500 bonus as an incentive to get those shots. Individuals who come to work Monday that have proof they’ve received a shot over the weekend won’t be put on unpaid leave.
De Blasio pleaded with unvaccinated police officers as well during the NYPD’s annual Medal Day ceremony to get vaccinated. He’s now beginning to belatedly realize that a massive manpower shortage of police, firefighters, and EMS workers could spell catastrophe for public safety.
The leftist mayor declared, “Today, we honored people who made us safer. By getting vaccinated we’re making the city safer.”
Following the ceremony, de Blasio took his message to the eager press outside of the Police Academy in Queens, “My message to all city employees who are not yet vaccinated is: We care about you. We care about your health and your families’ health.”
“We care about the health of the people we serve and come in contact with every day,” he disingenuously told the Daily News.
If de Blasio thought his statements and incentives would unite New Yorkers over the jab, he was sorely disappointed. Protests and warnings are all over the city and up to 40 percent of firehouses could close down. There could also be up to 150 fewer ambulances a day in service over the mandate.
