An Illinois mother was tragically killed Sunday night by a stray bullet as she was reading the Bible to her seven-month-old daughter before bed.
Melanie Yates, a 23-year-old registered nurse, was shot in the head when a stray bullet entered her home around 9PM that evening in the 2800 block of Enoch Avenue in Zion, Illinois according to Fox 32 Chicago.
Melanie, a wife and mother to two young children, was taken to the hospital but sadly succumbed to her injuries on Monday morning.
“For my daughter to be shot in the head, she’s reading the Bible to her youngest 7-month-old daughter, getting ready for bed. It’s unreal. We couldn’t even believe it,” said Lam Calderon, Yates’ mother.

“You totally transformed the lives of my son-in-law and my granddaughters. They will never know their mother again. It’s heartbreaking because she wasn’t out and about, she was in her own home,” Calderon added.
Yates was not the intended target of the senseless tragedy according to police.
Lake County Major Crime Task Force spokesman Christopher Covelli said when police officers arrived they found evidence of several shots that had been fired near the roadway according to Lake & McHenry County Scanner.
“Everybody who knew Lanie knows she loved Jesus Christ with every fiber of her being. There is no doubt whatsoever that she is in heaven at this very moment. But we on earth miss her very dearly,” Yates’ brother, Stephan Calderon wrote in a social media post, the County Scanner reported.
“We miss her passionate, powerful prayers. We miss her infectious laugh. We miss her beautiful singing voice lifting songs of worship. We miss her feisty, witty humor. We miss her dedication to being an amazing, godly mom and wife. We miss her. And we wish with every fiber of our being she was here, but we know she’s in a better place,” Calderon added.
The police have not yet identified a suspect, but the family is hopeful that they will receive closure.
“Solving this case won’t bring her back, but it will lead to closure for us that love Lanie,” Shawn Calderon, the father of Yates, told Fox32.
Yates’ parents shared with the local outlet that they miss their daughter’s spirit. They said that she loved God and aspired to have more children with her husband, Daniel, so she put her career on hold.
The beloved woman’s brother, Stephan, started a GoFundMe that has raised over $77,000 of their $100,000 goal.
