The Duchess of Sussex would just go back to being Meghan Markle if congressional Republicans get their way.
Markle didn’t make any friends on the conservative side of the aisle when she sent a letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer advocating for paid family leave on Thursday.
Accusing her of trying to interfere with American politics, Republicans were not impressed, and openly hinted at their desire to see her stripped of her pretensions to a noble title, as evidenced by Representative Jason Smith’s (R-MO) comments to the Daily Mail on the matter:
“Ms. Markle’s latest interference in U.S. politics reignites the question in my mind as to why the Royal Family does not simply strip her and Harry officially of their titles, particularly since she insists on sending this under the pretense of being the Duchess of Sussex. While her attempts at appealing to working-class families by recalling her days of eating at Sizzler were laughable, her comments make crystal clear that the passage of this massive tax-and-spend bill is aimed more at helping global elites get huge tax breaks than helping the working families she claims to have dined with.”
The letter itself was a lengthy exposition in which Markle talks about various times she had to do various activities to help the family get by, such as getting a job, or eating at a salad bar. In one line, she even says that the American economic systems are “past their expiration date.”
It struck some as the “tactics of an aspiring politician,” according to the D.C. rumor mill, and led many to complain of her being out of touch and far from destitute, especially when her now-estranged father Thomas Markle had her in a private school from Kindergarten onward, or the fact that she’s married to a royal prince and lives in a $14 million mansion in Los Angeles, with another $100 million to her name.
“Meghan Markle is incredibly out of touch with the American people and should stick to acting instead of trying to play politics. The last thing we need right now is wealthy celebrities pushing their liberal agendas on the American people,” Representative Lisa McClain (R-MI) told the Daily Mail.
The fact that her letter was noted “from the office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex,” struck Angela Levin, biographer of Prince Harry, as being particularly tone-deaf and telling of Markle’s ambitions – and who wears the pants in her marriage:
“Meghan’s two page letter to lobby Congress about giving money on parental leave, is obviously another step towards trying to turn herself into a politician. But the notepaper she is using is astonishingly ‘From the Office of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’ and shows how she isn’t even aware that she is talking to politicians in a republic that won its independence from the crown in 1776. The truth is that the bill about parental leave is on its way to being confirmed, and could be hijack by Meghan’s belief it was largely due to her. In addition if she was writing a profession letter what on earth is she getting all cosy and intimate by stating the letter is also ‘on behalf of Archie and Lili – notice she is not calling her Lillibet, the Queen’s nickname – and Harry. Poor old Harry has come last.”
This isn’t the first time Markle has raised ire for perceived meddling in American politics, nor the first time American politicians have requested her to be stripped of her “Duchess” title. In September of 2020, when early voting was beginning, Harry told Americans to “reject hate speech,” as Markle asserted it was “the most important election of our lifetime.” Then, too, Rep. Smith had called upon the British Crown to cut her off from her title as the Duchess of Sussex.
Since then, she and Harry have been hard at work championing woke causes in expensive clothes at gala receptions, taking pictures with minority children before quickly returning to their posh mansions.
