Head football coach and assistants fired from Washington State Univ after refusing to get the jab

Washington State University head football coach Nick Rolovich and four of his assistants were terminated for cause on Monday after refusing to get the COVID vaccination by the mandate deadline of October 18.

Rolovich, 42, was the highest-paid state employee in Washington, raking in $3.2 million a year. He was seeking a religious exemption to the mandate but was evidently denied. The assistants let go with him included: Ricky Logo (defensive tackles), John Richardson (assistant head coach, cornerbacks), Craig Stutzmann (co-offensive coordinator, quarterbacks), and Mark Weber (offensive line).

“I don’t think this is in my hands,” Rolovich remarked before he was fired, according to CBS Sports. “I’ve been settled for a long time on it, and I believe it’s going to work out the right way.”

The former head coach proclaimed during the summer that he would not get vaccinated “for reasons which will remain private.” The second-year head coach claimed he wasn’t an anti-vaxxer.

“The noncompliance with this requirement renders [Rolovich] ineligible to be employed at Washington State University and therefore can no longer fulfill the duties as a head coach of our football program effective immediately. This is a disheartening day for our football program. Our priority has been and will continue to be the health and well-being of the young men on our team,” athletic director Pat Chun commented via a statement.

“The leadership on our football team is filled with young men of character, selflessness, and resiliency and we are confident these same attributes will help guide this program as we move forward,” he remarked.

Washington State University President Kirk Schulz stated, “While much has been made of the relatively small number of university employees who are not complying with the Governor’s mandate, we are immensely gratified that nearly 90 percent of WSU employees and 97 percent of our students are now vaccinated. WSU students, faculty, and staff understand the importance of getting vaccinated and wearing masks so that we can safely return to in-person learning and activities.”

“I am proud of all those members of our community who have set the example and taken the steps to protect not just themselves, but their fellow Cougs,” he asserted, according to Fox News.

Defensive coordinator Jake Dickert will become interim head coach in Rolovich’s stead. He takes on a 4-3 team that is in the middle of a three-game winning streak. Washington State ranks third in the PAC-12 North.

Rolovich and his assistants are not the only ones in Washington state to leave over the vaccine mandate. It is estimated that approximately 40 percent of an already gutted Seattle police force will also be terminated for refusing to get the jab. Thousands of government employees risk being fired as well.

A Washington State Patrol officer named Robert LaMay signed off following 22 years on the force after refusing to take a COVID vaccine. In a viral video, he said goodbye to his colleagues and thanked them for their service. He said he was being fired “because I am dirty.”

LeMay concluded with a message to the governor of Washington state, “I wish I could say more, but this is it so state 10-34, this is the last time you’ll hear me in a state patrol car. And Jay Inslee can kiss my a**.”

Gov. Inslee’s vaccine mandate prohibited “any State Agency from permitting any worker to engage in work for the agency after October 18, 2021, if the worker has not been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and provided proof thereof to the agency.”

Many are proud of the former head coach for taking a stand:
