MSNBC guest calls tweet mocking stabbing death of British pol ‘a lapse’, Twitter pounces

Liberal journalist and commentator Elizabeth Drew is in hot water after posting a despicable tweet, mocking the stabbing and death of beloved British Conservative Member of Parliament, Sir David Amess, and making a tasteless joke about his name.

The British Conservative MP was speaking to constituents and hosting a meet-and-greet at an event at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea Friday when a 25-year-old man entered and stabbed Amess repeatedly.

The popular politician was treated by emergency services but, sadly, died on the scene, according to the police.

“A perfect last name for a pol who’s stabbed at a town meeting. British lawmaker dies after being stabbed multiple times while meeting with constituents, police say David Amess,” Drew wrote in an abhorrent, since-deleted tweet.

The veteran journalist can’t blame naiveté for the tweet, as the 85-year-old has had a decades-long career in the industry.

Drew quickly faced a slew of backlash for the comment.

“You know when you inevitably say ‘my account was hacked’ no one will believe you,” comedian and actor Bennett Arron responded.

“Hoping this New Yorker veteran has some millennial doing her tweets, because this is just ghastly. She should take it down,” Tim Graham of NewsBusters and the Media Research Center wrote.

Others pointed out that Drew’s insensitivity would also be felt by those mourning Amess.

“F****** lapse?! A decent man was brutally killed. He was loved by many. A community is mourning. His heartbroken loved ones will NEVER be the same. Make a proper apology to his family,” one user demanded.

Drew later wrote a flippant apology that may have been worse than the initial tweet– exuding her absence of decency or respect for the tragic situation, for Amess, and for those left to mourn his loss.

“Apols for a lapse. Tweet deleted,” the journalist wrote, as though that is all that would be required to remediate the situation.

Drew couldn’t even manage to write out “apologies,” opting instead to coldly shorthand it.

Twitter users demolished the journalist for her dually disgusting tweets:

Drew’s claim to fame came from her coverage of the Watergate scandal. Since then, she has been a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, appearing frequently on “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” and other MSNBC programs to express her outrage.

Amess, a cherished husband, father of five, and devoted public servant was treasured deeply by family, friends and constituents as the tweets confirm.

The man who allegedly murdered Amess is in custody and police are not looking for any other suspects at this time.
