‘How can she see straight?’ Psaki lays some serious spin on John Kerry’s claim about France’s fury

White House press secretary Jen Psaki furiously tried to spin climate envoy John Kerry’s response that Biden was not aware of France’s anger over the AUKUS submarine deal during her press briefing on Wednesday.

Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy cornered her on Kerry’s statement that the President “had not been aware of what had transpired” following the nuclear submarine deal that resulted in the enraged French recalling their ambassador and French President Emmanuel Macron reportedly refusing to take Biden’s calls. “What else are you guys not telling the president?” he asked Psaki.

“Of course he was aware of the French being upset,” Psaki tersely replied. “He of course was aware, the president, of the French being displeased about the deal with the Australians. John Kerry also speaks regularly to the French as part of his role as the climate envoy. He’s someone who also served as secretary of state.”

Doocy did not let up when she did not answer his question and asked again why Biden “doesn’t know about these things in real-time.”

Psaki again reiterated that Biden “of course knew about the French being displeased” and suggested Doocy should “ask John Kerry specifically about the context of his comments,” claiming Biden and Kerry “are good friends.”

The questions were in reference to an interview that aired on Monday with French broadcaster BFMTV where Kerry remarked that Biden had “literally not been aware of what had transpired” in response to the fallout over the nuclear submarine deal between the U.S., the United Kingdom, and Australia. The deal nixed a massive submarine contract that Australia had with the French.

“President Biden asked me about it, and I told him and expressed…,” Kerry started.

“You told Joe Biden that it was not the right…,” the interviewer asked.

“He asked me. He said, ‘what’s the situation?’ and I explained exactly, uh… He was, he had not been aware of that, he literally, literally had not been aware of what had transpired,” Kerry claimed. “And I don’t want to go into the details of it, but suffice it to say, that that the president… My president is very committed to, um, strengthening the relationship and making sure that this is a small event of the past and moving on to the much more important future. We have a relationship with France that is so much bigger than this moment.”

After France got wind of the deal, they issued a blistering statement from French Minister Of Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian and Minister of the Armed Forces Florence Parly that claimed the decision was “contrary to the letter and spirit of the cooperation that prevailed between France and Australia, based on a relationship of political trust as well as on the development of a very high-level defense industrial and technological base in Australia.”

“The American choice to exclude a European ally and partner such as France from a structuring partnership with Australia, at a time when we are facing unprecedented challenges in the Indo-Pacific region, whether in terms of our values or in terms of respect for multilateralism based on the rule of law, shows a lack of coherence that France can only note and regret,” the statement added.

“The regrettable decision that has just been announced regarding the FSP program only reinforces the need to make the issue of European strategic autonomy loud and clear,” the statement asserted. “There is no other credible way to defend our interests and our values in the world, including in the Indo-Pacific.”
