Politico congressional reporter Heather Caygle is being shredded on social media after she attempted to shame the family of fallen Marine Sgt. Nicole Gee for going maskless while on a tour of the Capitol.
“Masks requirement in the House. Tours not allowed. Yet here we are — group of 9, only 2 in masks,” Caygle arrogantly carped on Twitter Thursday.
Politico’s co-congressional Bureau Chief shared a photograph in her tweet that showed Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA) giving the mostly maskless Gold Star family a tour in a nearly empty Statuary Hall.
Gee was one of the 13 U.S. service members who lost their lives in the Kabul airport suicide bombing in Afghanistan during President Biden’s disastrous withdrawal and evacuation from the Middle East country.

The Sr. Director for The Herald Group, Steven D. Smith, who was formerly with the House GOP, tweeted a caustic response to the clueless journo: “Instead of immediately being a tattletale, maybe ask some questions first. If you did, you would learn that this is the family of fallen Marine Sgt. Nicole Gee, getting a tour from their Congressman Tom McClintock. Maybe consider taking this tweet down.”
Instead of backing off and apologizing, Caygle doubled down. “How does that exempt them from wearing a mask?” she self-righteously asked.

Lawmakers slammed Caygle for going after the grieving Gold Star family over not bending the knee and wearing masks to placate the Biden administration.
“Look, an opinion from a D.C. journalist that nobody asked for. Attacking @RepMcClintock for spending time with the family of Sgt. Gee is pathetic. Sit this one out,” Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) admonished Caygle.
Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) blasted the reporter for her hypocritical silence over House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) going maskless earlier this week while shmoozing with a crowd of people during a “Build Back Better on Climate” event.
“On Tuesday, @SpeakerPelosi was hugging and shaking hands with over a dozen people without a mask. Not a word was reported from this journalist who is now smearing a Gold Star Family on a Capitol tour so far away she had to zoom in,” Banks tweeted.

Then Caygle got an earful from other critics who were incensed over her callous scolding of the bereaved family.
“The family of a fallen Marine get a tour of the Capitol and @heatherscope publicly shames them for not wearing a mask. This is psychotic behavior,” conservative commentator Matt Walsh adroitly tweeted.
“Another example of why Americans hate the media so much, and rightfully so,” Townhall.com senior writer Julio Rosas noted on Twitter.
“‘911, what’s your emergency?’ ‘Please help, a Gold Star family is getting a tour of the Capitol!’” Substack writer Jim Treacher said, ridiculing the journalist.
“A reporter picking on a Gold Star family for being maskless in a WIDE EMPTY space is precisely why people despise the media. They’re vultures,” Erielle Davidson of the Jewish Institute for National Security of America similarly stated.
Caygle’s outrageous criticism of the family went viral on social media:
A Gold Star family comes to the Capitol and this is your takeaway? Why don’t you spend your time looking for your missing soul?

What’s it like to be a piece of crap? It’s such a shame that brave men and women had to die for people like you.

You JACKASS those are GOLD STAR FAMILIES!

Just in general, maybe reporters shouldn't be using their platforms to shame completely random civilians, especially with pictures that make them easily identifiable. When did that become news rather than upscale bullying?

Unbelievably tone-deaf.

Clears up why she's so concerned about masks. It ain't the rona she's covering. Try being thankful for the sacrifices made by 13 and their families.

A fallen soldier’s family. Show some respect. Oh and I saw plenty of pictures of @potus last night without a mask in close quarters. No calling out of him?

That family gave their daughter for this country. Who gives a flying ef if they do or don’t wear a mask.
