‘What hope am I supposed to have now?’: Pregnant Calif. woman State Dept. left in Afghanistan losing faith

A pregnant California woman stranded in Afghanistan says the Taliban gunmen prevented her and her husband from getting a flight home just “15 steps” away from the Kabul airport gate.

“Our troops were literally at the gate just waiting for us to continue walking, and they had blocked us. There was a time that like, I went past them and started walking as fast as I can, and they started shooting right by my leg and told me to come back or they would shoot me,” she claimed.

In the interview with the Voice of America, the discouraged woman known as Nasria who travelled to Kabul in June to marry her boyfriend wondered “Am I going to end up dying here? What’s gonna happen?”

“I’ve never in my life have experienced anything like this,” she said. “It was like literally a movie scene.”

Currently in hiding, Nasria, 25, claimed she and her spouse slept on the street for several days outside the airport in an attempt to obtain evacuation, but her flight was cancelled.

Making matters worse, the U.S. State Department subsequently instructed her to report to a specific location near the airport. Twelve or 13 hours elapsed, but no one arrived there to pick her up.

Nasria also said that she was unwilling to leave the country unless accompanied by her husband, an Afghan national, who had pleaded with the Taliban to let her go on her own. “My child is gonna need a father. I’m gonna need a husband by my side.”

She added that Taliban fighters are going door to door in a hunt for U.S. passport holders.

U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) is trying to help Nasria (as well as an elderly couple) get out of Afghanistan, and he is in regular touch with the woman who is sheltering in place and concealing her identity.

The chaotic situation is even more dangerous in terms of arranging for a rescue in that cell phone communications are being surveilled, he told Fox News, however.

Issa also said Taliban fighters kicked the pregnant woman in the stomach at one of the airport checkpoints while she was waiting in vain for U.S. officials to come out and escort her into the airport.

Issa accused the Biden administration of downplaying the number of Americans left behind after the botched U.S. troop withdrawal, insisting that it could be as many as 500 stranded U.S. citizens or green-card holders.

“Anyone that says they didn’t break a promise to the American people and leave people behind is wrong. Anyone who says there aren’t people stranded is wrong. These people were stranded; they did everything that they were supposed to do, and they simply were not a priority at the end,” the congressman declared.
