Republican California gubernatorial candidate Larry Elder is getting a ringing endorsement – from Democrat Gloria Romero, former California Senate Majority Leader.
While speaking on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” on Thursday, Romero stated that Elder is the “best option” to take incumbent Governor Gavin Newsom’s place in the event of a successful recall vote, citing Newsom’s hypocritical and arrogant behavior.
“I was just tired of the false narrative that was put forward that this was a right-wing conspiracy. There are 1.7 million Californians that signed that recall petition – I was one of them,” said Romero.
Romero continued, discussing the hypocrisy of Newsom’s rules during California’s harsh COVID-19 lockdowns and the union domination of California’s schools.
“I was tired of the ‘rules for thee but not for me’ attitude of the prince of the French laundry, who shut down our public schools but then he sent his kids to school. I looked at Larry’s record and believe that he’s our best option to really break the monopoly of special interest when it comes to education and to offer, especially Latino and African American families in California school choice options,” she said.

According to Romero, the backlash and discontent that has led to Newsom’s recall effort are both widespread and bipartisan, an extensive dissatisfaction across much of the political spectrum.
A large part of this, Romero alleged, is not just the endless lockdown, but that the quality of California’s schools has fallen so low, a fact that is “very upsetting,” and that minorities, in particular, have had enough, endorsing the recall in order to support more school choices. Up to 70% of Latino students and 80% of black students are not adequately proficient in math, stated Romero.
“But because of the way in which the schools are run, even when the state identifies a school as chronically underperforming, kids can’t get out. You’re zip-coded there. The powerful monopoly of the California Teachers Association, which is a major endorser of the Democratic Party and of course Gavin, it blocks any type of reform,” said Romero.
Reactions were mixed, with some of the Democratic faithful excoriating her political heresy in the usual tones:
Former California State Senate majority leader Gloria Romero ignores @LarryElder’s documented #misogyny in endorsing his candidacy in the #CaliforniaRecallElection.

While others rose to her defense:
Gloria Romero is a Democrat with a brain.

Gloria Romero (D-CA) actually sounds sane

Romero’s endorsement may not be as shocking as it appears at first glance.
Republicans have been making inroads with Latinos and showed real gains among the demographic in the 2020 elections. This has led to further Republican courting of Latino districts, which have borne some fruit, and may lead to a hole in Newsom’s armor big enough for the recall effort to succeed.
Christian Arana, vice president of policy at the Latino Community Foundation, summed up Newsom’s attitude towards California Latinos:
“There is no recognition of us, our problems, and we don’t feel like we’re part of the solution.”
