Chelsea Manning, the former U.S. Army soldier who leaked thousands of military documents to WikiLeaks, has turned against one of her staunchest supporters, Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Glenn Greenwald, and all because of his consistent politics.
Despite being fairly far-left in his views, in recent years Greenwald has become a vocal critic of the establishment left and far-left because of their demonstrable embrace of corporatism, authoritarianism, illiberalism and elitist bigotry.
To be clear, his views today are no different than they were 10 or 20 years ago. He’s always supported far-left social policies, and he’s always stood up against corporatism, authoritarianism, illiberalism, elitism, imperialism, etc.
Manning has nevertheless joined up with the hordes of far-left zealots who now dismiss Greenwald as an “unprincipled” hack and grifter who’s allegedly sold out to the right.
In tweets posted Thursday afternoon, the transgender woman and former intelligence analyst went so far as to say she wants to return a $10,000 donation Greenwald had once given her and is now “embarrassed” that she’d ever considered the Pulitzer prize-winning journalist a friend.
Look:
glenn greenwald, i don’t have $10,000 right now but if i get it i want to send it back to you from a donation you once did. i can’t deal with this anymore. im terrified of you and everything you do. you’re greedy, unprincipled, and im embarrassed for ever considering you a friend

last night during the floods i decided that im no longer going to be afraid of saying what’s on my mind anymore or taking a stand from the people that i once considered allies but who have chosen to bash, harass, humiliate, intimidate, and lie to get ahead
— Chelsea E. Manning (@xychelsea) September 2, 2021
to those he has hurt im sorry i didn’t say anything I was scared and that’s my fault

While Manning didn’t specify her exact reason for this back-stabbing rant, it’s strongly believed by most people that she’s gone “woke” — because one of the core principles of “wokism” is that dissenting views must be silenced because “speech is violence.”
Choosing wokeism over principles and truth. Real nice.

In fact, Manning’s supporters can be seen on Twitter explicitly praising her for standing up to the “racist transphobic anti feminist anti woke incel” Glennwald allegedly represents.
Look:
How brave @xychelsea, Bert aka Greenwald has a cult following esp amongst racist transphobic anti feminist anti woke incel IDW dumb af yg millennials many of them women btw who think Fatberg was ‘funny’ and gd on foreign policies they love these idiots Paglia & spit machine Žižek https://t.co/bwIq5BHoMO

All this anger stems from Greenwald being a vociferous critic of “woke” tenets like censorship. He even spoke out when former President Donald Trump was banned from Twitter earlier this year:
Liberals are absolutely authoritarian censors — they believe in the justifiability of tech overlords silencing their political adversaries — and now that they’ll be in control of the mechanics of government (to pressure tech companies & censor themselves), this will worsen: https://t.co/JOfDTrdO4u

A major plank of US liberalism (including journalists) is eagerness for more online censorship of political speech.
But since nobody likes to admit they’re censors, they’ve invented a euphemism for it — “content moderation” — and constantly demand that instead. Watch for it.

The Founding Father of MSNBC liberalism calls for the banning of one of the country’s most popular YouTubers from Twitter and every other internet platform. It’s hard to overstate how authoritarian is US liberalism: begging for corporate censorship is one of their leading tools: pic.twitter.com/9uGgRxNdrC

US and western liberals have elevated internet censorship to one of their top causes and have been trained to adore Atlantic Council censorship activists like @jaredlholt. They’re in servitude to a tiny handful of billionaires & western security services:https://t.co/DpsTetG4JT

However, he doesn’t oppose censorship because he’s “right-wing.” He opposes it because, one, it’s wrong, and two, he recognizes that censorship is all-encompassing:
Congratulations once again to all the liberals and leftists — led by their journalists — who urged censorship of political speech by Silicon Valley monopolists based in the belief that it would only be used to silence your adversaries and enemies but never your allies. 👍 https://t.co/efDUTSC5Hb

Greenwald eventually responded to Manning’s tweets later Thursday afternoon by dropping some truth bombs about friendship and principles.
“Friendships that depend on political agreement were never ‘friendships,’ just cynical transactions,” he wrote.
True.
“When she was in prison trying repeatedly to kill herself, I was one of the only one who visited, spent hours on the phone, raising money for her. No good deed goes unpunished,” he added.
After being sentenced to 35 years in prison in 2013, Manning wound up making several suicide attempts. Greenwald was one of a few to stand by her side throughout the ordeal.
Manning’s sentence was eventually commuted by then-outgoing President Barack Hussein Obama in early 2017.

Anyway, sometimes people are nice to you as long as you’re of use to them and provide them things they want, then turn on you when you can’t or won’t any longer.
As long as you know you gave and defended them with the right motives — as I did — your conscience should clean.
— Glenn Greenwald (@ggreenwald) September 2, 2021
Greenwald continued his response by correctly pointing out that many on the left have forgotten what friendship is supposed to mean.
Look:
Lots of people on the left — not all, but many — mistake friendships for political agreements, such that when the political agreement erodes, for them the “friendship” does, too.
Friendships that don’t transcend politics or require political agreement have no value.
— Glenn Greenwald (@ggreenwald) September 2, 2021
While Julian Assange is rotting in prison, @ChelseaManning recently smeared him when he couldn’t defend himself, announcing that if she had to do it over again, she would not have leaked to WikiLeaks.
Maligning someone unjustly rotting in prison is not an attribute I value.
— Glenn Greenwald (@ggreenwald) September 2, 2021
Anyway, as I’ve long said, this is what left-liberal spaces have become. They all turn on each other, denounce each other, repudiate one another. Their currency is this form of self-victimizing grievance. So grateful I’m not captive to or dependent on it:https://t.co/WstJGgpubo

There’s a reason polling data shows that Republicans tend to have more Democrat friends than Democrats have Republican friends, and there’s a reason why Republicans are far less likely to drop a friendship over politics than Democrats …
