Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said on Wednesday that President Joe Biden will not be impeached over the catastrophe in Afghanistan because both the House and Senate are currently Democrat-controlled.
Speaking before a raucous crowd at an event in Pikeville, Kentucky, McConnell dashed any notion of Biden’s impeachment with his trademark thick molasses manner of speech.
“The president is not going to be removed from office. It’s a Democratic House, a narrowly Democratic Senate, that’s not going to happen,” he drawled.
The best way, he said, to make certain that “behaviors get adjusted in this country is at the ballot box,” indicating that voters should make their voices heard at the polls, a hackneyed axiom that establishment Republicans love to repeat, though they are historically afraid to wield power when they have it. Coupled with a widespread lack of confidence in elections, and McConnell’s words don’t exactly assuage or inspire.
The minority leader’s statement comes amid increasing calls for the president’s impeachment or resignation on the heels of the colossally-botched Afghanistan withdrawal that left 13 young U.S. service members dead, several others wounded, and a seemingly unknowable number of Americans stranded along with thousands of Afghans who assisted the U.S.
Former President Trump’s first impeachment was over a phone call.

This isn’t about a party. Biden has done nothing right and God is going to show you that!

I wish @LeaderMcConnell would’ve educated them that we impeach for high crimes & misdemeanors; there’s a diff between a mission going badly & hc&m. He hinted at it re midterm vote, but would’ve helped to state ir directly, IMO.
I do appreciate him squashing impeachment talk, tho’— Diana Jensen Cramer (@TheTrueDJC) September 1, 2021
“Mission going badly” is also subjective

what the hell is Mitch McConnell talking about?
only a lifelong Swamp creature like him would argue that a president can do THIS much damage to America and not face SPECIFIC accountability
OF COURSE Biden must be impeached!

Of course Mitch McConnell just shot down any talk that Biden would be impeached over Afghanistan! After all, he just helped Biden get elected in 2020. Along with most of the GOP establishment. Remember?

Sens. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) have both advocated for the resignation or impeachment of Biden.
“Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Antony Blinken, Lloyd Austin and General Milley should all resign or face impeachment and removal from office,” Blackburn said.
Powerful words on Twitter no doubt, but words that amount to nothing since accountability has no place in the D.C. swampland.
Other calls for impeachment and Biden’s resignation have come from Reps. Ronny Jackson (R-TX), Byron Donalds (R-Fl), Claudia Tenney (R-NY), and Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY).
On Tuesday, Biden did his best to take responsibility and shift blame at once in a curiously angry speech that was often slurred and apparently directed at the clouds – a speech infused with a muddling array of contradictions.
At its root though, is Biden’s deadly failure of backward reasoning, where you start with a conclusion and work to find ways to support it. Biden wanted to be the guy who got us out of Afghanistan. Whatever diabolical influence spurred him, he was going to be that guy.
But it failed and lives were unnecessarily taken by terrorists whom he allowed quarter, so he must manufacture reasons for his criminal incompetence, his brazen indifference, and that means that if you like the outcome, then it’s all him, and that buck has stopped on his desk. A man for all seasons. King Joe the Dim of Wit.
If you don’t like the outcome, then it’s Trump’s fault. A president who was scurrilously impeached twice for far less than what Biden warrants.
