Matthew Dowd doubles down on Biden praise: ‘Most honest and competent moments of presidential leadership’

Last week, political pundit Matthew Dowd outrageously claimed that President Biden “should be congratulated” for doing “unbelievable yeoman’s work” in Afghanistan and now he’s doubling down on his assertion declaring that Biden was extremely “competent” in his handling of Afghanistan.

“The fact is the most honest and competent moments of presidential leadership on Afghanistan over the last 19 years was the last two weeks or so. Don’t we want leaders to tell us the truth and serve the public? That is exactly what president Biden did,” Dowd tweeted on Tuesday.

That comment was met with not only extreme criticism but anger by many out there after Biden’s botched withdrawal from Afghanistan that left 13 service members and at many Afghans dead in its wake. Many branded his comments “delusional.”

“He was dealt a horrible situation and as of today, he has done an extremely good job in this situation,” Dowd told CNN anchor Kate Bolduan last week. “There were many people over the last seven days that said there’s no possible way he could get 50,000 people out… he’s gotten out 70,000 people in the last eight days.”

“I actually think the President, for what he was dealt and for what he has done over the last week, should be congratulated on the way this was done,” Dowd originally contended. “And he’s the first president in four presidents to actually get done what the American people wanted to get done in Afghanistan, which was to get out,” Dowd declared.

Dowd is a former aide to George W. Bush and since then, he has swung radically to the left in politics.

He has slammed the media for its coverage of the Afghan crisis while arduously defending Biden’s actions in the deadly debacle. Dowd left ABC News this year and moved over to CNN and MSNBC where his opinion is often sought against Republicans and where he has nothing but praise for President Biden.

“George W. Bush is the one who should be lambasted the most in this coverage… The original sin of the problem we’re seeing unfolding and everything that’s happened in 20 years is at his doorstep,” Dowd said on CNN’s “Reliable Sources” to host Brian Stelter. He put all the blame on Bush for Afghanistan and none on Biden for his disastrous handling of it.

The coverage was “way over the top and unconnected to a perspective on the issue from the beginning,” he posited last week. “We should judge it on the data of what’s happened and not by anecdotes, and sometimes the press has a tendency to judge things by anecdotes and not the data. And the data for the last week shows Joe Biden has basically gotten 30,000 people out of Afghanistan without a single loss of an American life.”

That did not age well as just a few days later 13 service members were blown to pieces in a bombing at the Kabul airport.

“Keep in mind one thing,” Dowd urged. “5,000 people, while this was going on, died of COVID-19 in this country. 500 people died of gun violence in this country. And not a single American has died in the midst of this chaotic situation in a political hurricane, and I don’t think the press fully understands what the context is for the American public. And so when you understand the context not only of Afghanistan but the context of what’s going on in our country, there’s far worse crisis situations, including the assault on our democracy, that get forgotten about in the midst of this.”

Dowd was roasted for what many see as his dishonest portrayal of Biden’s actions concerning Afghanistan:
