Man in Georgia shockingly steals mortuary van, dead body falls out as police give chase

An Atlanta, Georgia man named Kijon Griffin shockingly stole a mortuary van from a crematorium and a dead body rolled out of the back of the vehicle as he sped away ahead of an ensuing police chase.

Griffin, 23, stole the van on Wednesday after he was spotted by law enforcement. He jumped into the vehicle and then led police on an extended chase through Georgia according to authorities. He has numerous outstanding warrants. Pending charges include entering an automobile, motor vehicle theft, and attempting to elude police.

The owner of Stan Henderson & Sons Mortuary, Stan Henderson, told Fox5 Atlanta that “it’s ridiculous that the dead can’t even rest.”

“Something you see in the movies really,” an employee also incredulously told Fox5 Atlanta.

The body that rolled out of the back of the van was on a gurney and wound up in the parking lot where it eventually came to rest. Employees had been in the process of unloading the cadaver when the van was hijacked. They were able to safely secure the body and return it to the crematorium.

“Unfortunately there was a body on the gurney inside and when the suspect did take off the gurney rolled out of the van, it did end up in the parking lot, at least thankfully it didn’t go out into the road,” said Capt. Lucas.

Officers pursued the stolen mortuary van onto Interstate 20 West where assistance from DeKalb County authorities and the Georgia State Patrol was requested.

Griffin led police on a merry 20-minute chase from the city of Congers to DeKalb County where he ran into multiple vehicles, smashed into a trailer, and blew out a tire. He then fled on foot and ran into the woods. Police went in after him with dogs on his scent.
