The 22-year-old German track and field competitor, Alica Schmidt, also dubbed “World’s Sexiest Athlete” by her fans, has announced that she is taking a break from the sport after a disappointing experience at the Tokyo Olympics.
The announcement came Tuesday evening from Schmidt’s Instagram, where she cited coronavirus and torn ligaments as struggles this year that have impacted her performance.
Schmidt never got the chance to compete in Tokyo earlier this month after she failed to qualify for preliminary 4x400m relays. In addition, the German team was disqualified for making contact with the Jamaican team in the mixed 4x400m relay.
“Not gonna lie, I’m not satisfied with my races this year. I’ve worked harder than ever before day in day out pushed my limits in every workout and made so many sacrifices,” the runner wrote on her Instagram.

“It was not an easy year with my Covid Infection and torn ligaments but nevertheless, I know what I am capable of and I‘m hungry for more,” she continued, “Now, I’m going to take a break and I’m looking forward to coming back feeling fresh and ready to train hard again.”
The German beauty hasn’t announced a finite date to return to the sport.
While she may not have won gold, Schmidt did not leave the Olympics empty-handed. She reportedly garnered an additional 500,000 Instagram followers while documenting her time inside the Olympic Village. Schmidt now has 2.5 million followers on the social media platform.
Earlier this year, Schmidt expressed her gratefulness to return to training outdoors after struggling with torn ligaments and muscular problems.
“Yesterday I ran my first race of this season over 400m and I‘m so excited for the upcoming weeks!
After my torn ligament and some muscular problems I am so thankful to be able to run again and very happy with the result yesterday,” Schmidt posted on her Instagram.

Puma, who sponsors the runner, appeared to take no issue with her announcement. In addition to being sponsored by Puma, Schmidt collaborates with a number of German brands on her social media.
While she may be taking a break from the track, fans will be interested to see if Schmidt leans full time into her online presence and influencer role.
