Chuck Todd concedes Biden has forfeited one of his key advantages over Trump

NBC anchor Chuck Todd was uncharacteristically critical of President Biden on Tuesday and stated that he has lost his “high marks” in “competency” in comparison to former President Trump regarding his handling of Afghanistan’s fall to the Taliban.

The surprising assessment was given during a segment with MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson who is covering the facts on the ground in Afghanistan. The Meet the Press host was breaking down the repercussions from the Taliban seizing control of the country and the situation as it stands in Kabul. His assertion was prompted by Biden’s latest remarks where he blamed everyone but himself for the debacle. Todd did note that Biden didn’t throw the Pentagon or the intel agencies under the bus.

“You’ve got to ask: the orderly part of this, what went wrong?” Todd posited. He then stated that the greatest political fallout from this chaotic mess will be the impact it has on Biden’s perceived competency.

“Joe Biden’s greatest strength against Donald Trump in the campaign was the idea that he has been around the block, he knows what he’s doing, we’re facing this crisis with COVID, we need some basic competency back in government, no more chaos. He’s lost the competency high-marks he was getting at one time, and that’s tough to get back,” he surmised.

Biden has squarely put the blame for all of this on former President Trump. He has blamed the Afghan government, their military, and their citizens as well. But while he is quick to assign blame, in the end, it was his decision to withdraw from the terrorist-infected country and that will tarnish his image forever. It will undoubtedly always be compared to the fall of Saigon in 1975 at the end of the Vietnam War and/or the Bay of Pigs invasion.

Nonetheless, Biden doubled and tripled down on his catastrophic decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan.

“When I came into office, I inherited a deal that President Trump negotiated with the Taliban,” Biden stated on Monday. “Under his agreement, U.S. forces would be out of Afghanistan by May 1, 2021, just a little over three months after I took office. U.S. Forces had already drawn down during the Trump administration from roughly 15,500 American forces to 2,500 troops in the country.”

He then defensively said he only had two options… escalate the conflict or withdraw from Afghanistan. He contended, “I stand squarely behind my decision after 20 years I’ve learned the hard way that there was never a good time to withdraw U.S. Forces. That’s why we’re still there. ”

“We were clear-eyed about the risks. We planned for every contingency. But I always promised the American people that I will be straight with you. Truth is, this did unfold more quickly than we had anticipated,” Biden admitted.

“Here’s what I believe to my core,” he continued. “It is wrong to order American troops to step up when Afghanistan’s own armed forces would not.”

“How many more generations of America’s daughters and sons would you have me send to fight Afghanistan’s civil war when Afghan troops will not?” he asked. “How many more lives, American lives, is it worth, how many endless rows of headstones at Arlington national cemetery?”

“I’m clear in my answer,” Biden declared. “I will not repeat the mistakes we’ve made in the past. The mistake of staying and fighting indefinitely in a conflict that is not in the national interest of the United States, of doubling down on a civil war in a foreign country, of attempting to remake a country through the endless military deployments of U.S. Forces? Those are the mistakes we cannot continue to repeat because we have significant vital interest in the world that we can not afford to ignore.”

Former President Trump has publicly called for Biden’s resignation over the implosion of Afghanistan.

“It is time for Joe Biden to resign in disgrace for what he has allowed to happen to Afghanistan,” Trump wrote in a statement, “along with the tremendous surge in COVID, the Border catastrophe, the destruction of our energy independence, and our crippled economy. It shouldn’t be a big deal, because he wasn’t elected legitimately in the first place!”
