San Francisco claimed the dubious distinction on Thursday of becoming the first major city in the nation that will require a vaccine passport proving full vaccination in order to enter most indoor venues.
Anyone who is 12 and older will now be required to show their vaccination papers in order to eat at a restaurant, work out at a gym, attend a concert, go to a movie, or take part in a sports event according to the San Francisco Chronicle. And it doesn’t stop there. This applies to indoor events with more than 1,000 guests and, in fact, most places in San Francisco.
Mayor London Breed made the announcement at a press conference and the mandate is scheduled to go into effect on August 20th. However, she has not addressed the fact that drug addicts routinely shoot up and defecate in the streets of San Francisco which apparently is not as severe a health hazard as COVID is these days.
“We know that for our city to bounce back from the pandemic and thrive, we need to use the best method we have to fight COVID-19 and that’s vaccines,” Breed proclaimed in a statement. “Many San Francisco businesses are already leading the way by requiring proof of vaccination for their customers because they care about the health of their employees, their customers, and this City.”

“This is to protect kids, is to protect those who can’t get vaccinated, is to make sure that we don’t go backwards, is to make sure that I never have to get up in front of you and say, ‘I’m sorry, I know we just reopened and now the city is closed again because we are seeing too many people die,’” Breed asserted.
“Vaccines are our way out of the pandemic, and our way back to a life where we can be together safely,” she declared in a statement.
The mandate does not include people ordering takeout. It also does not apply to kids under the age of 12.
Lastly, I ask that people be patient with each other and try to lead with empathy. There will be challenges with this transition and we expect people will do their best to comply, as businesses and residents have done with our previous health orders.

San Francisco’s requirements are said to be even more stringent than those in New York City.
Many businesses in the City by the Bay have already been requiring their patrons to provide proof of vaccination or a negative coronavirus test before they can enter. San Francisco has also mandated masks in indoor public areas whether you are vaccinated or not. That order affected more than 7 million residents.
A large number of businesses are confused by the mandate. Others are supportive of it.
“These increased provisions hopefully will expedite all public gathering places ability get back to doing what we all love — being a space for community in service to all San Franciscans,” crowed Casey Lowdermilk, co-founder of the San Francisco Venue Coalition.
According to a city news release, almost 78 percent of San Francisco residents are now vaccinated. Nonetheless, the city’s current Covid-19 test positivity rate is 5.6 percent which is even higher than the peak of the winter surge which was 5.2 percent. This is an indicator of breakthrough infections.
“In this phase of the pandemic, we must optimize the powerful tool of vaccines to protect us as we fully reopen to business,” stated Dr. Grant Colfax, San Francisco’s director of health. “These past few weeks have demonstrated how important it is that everyone eligible is vaccinated as we resume normal activities.”
Vaccines are now mandated for healthcare workers in San Francisco. That includes pharmacists, dental offices, home health aides, and residential care centers.
Not everyone is thrilled with the mandate, to say the least.
Conservative commenter Katie Pavlich quipped on Twitter, “Do I need a passport to shoot heroin on the street corner?”
