Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) is being scrutinized over $50,000 in alleged donations given to Stanford University from his campaign coffers prior to his son being accepted at the prestigious college.
Washington Examiner writer Tim Carney reported on Wednesday, “Congressman Ted Lieu has a son enrolled at Stanford, according to his social media profile. Lieu’s congressional campaign from early 2016 to mid-2018 donated $50,146 to Stanford University — $50,000 of that in two donations over nine months through the beginning of 2018.”
“Now, it appears one of Lieu’s sons is enrolled at Stanford, entering as a freshman this month — or at least that’s what his son’s social media account says,” he added.
The FEC clearly states, “Campaign committees can give gifts to charity. The amount donated to a charitable organization cannot be used for purposes that personally benefit the candidate.”

Carney also noted that when someone on Twitter tweeted about the alleged impropriety, their account was suspended.

Carney is not the first to report on the suspicious donations. Jennifer Van Laar at Red State blog wrote on it back in 2019.
“Take, for example, a pair of $25,000 contributions Rep. Lieu, the father of two teenage sons, made to Stanford University in 2017 and 2018. Were they made out of pure generosity, or for some other reason?” she asked at the time.
“Why is Rep. Lieu suddenly giving so generously to his alma mater (which is one of the elite universities involved in the “Varsity Blues” scandal)? There’s nothing concrete tying his gift to any personal gain, but since one of Lieu’s sons is in high school, the timing is rather curious,” Van Laar stated.
It should be noted that Lieu’s son is reportedly a high achiever and would probably have been accepted at Stanford University regardless of the donation. But the timing and size of the donations are curious and it appears to test the boundaries of political ethics. The university could very well have not even noted the donations since they did not reach seven figures.
However, this is not the first time that Lieu has had an apparent conflict of interest concerning donations. Van Laar also reported that he ostensibly donated campaign funds to an organization where his wife sat on the board of directors.
“Ted Lieu should be investigated for his Stanford donations. That is a very, very bad look,” one person said on Twitter.

“His poor son. Having to live with the fact that he didn’t earn his way into Stanford. My son is working on his doctorate in chemistry at Texas Tech, and teaching undergrads. He earned every bit of it on his own,” another wrote.

Former Acting Director of the United States National Intelligence Richard Grenell stated, “Outrageous abuse. @tedlieu should be forced to resign. Where the hell is the @latimes? @shelbygrad is in the tank for Democrats.”

Others piled on questioning the timing of the donations and Lieu’s as well as the university’s ethics in general:
