Carli Lloyd, a 16-year veteran of the U.S. women’s national soccer team, sent shock waves through the nation — and perhaps the world — by standing tall and proud during the playing of the national anthem before an Olympic game Thursday against Australia.

Right before the match started, the rest of her colleagues bent the knee as America’s national anthem blared through the stadium. She, however, chose to remain standing.

Look:

Despite the shock, awe and anger that erupted following this, she was being perfectly consistent with her past actions and rhetoric. In fact, she even stood during the playing of the national anthem on Martin Luther King Jr. Day this past January.

“Lloyd started in the USWNT’s friendly against Colombia Monday night, her first national team appearance since March of 2020. But before the game kicked off, the 38-year-old generated buzz by standing alongside three of her fellow starters during the national anthem,” Insider reported at the time.

“The other seven starters, including Megan Rapinoe and team captain Becky Sauerbrunn, all took a knee as the ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ played at Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida,” the outlet added.

Fellow team member Megan Rapinoe is a notorious anthem protester who’s convinced that America is an oppressive hellhole for women and minorities.

Questioned at the time about her decision to stand tall for the anthem, Lloyd said only that the team members support each other no matter what.

“I think the beauty of this team is that we stand behind each other no matter what. And, you know, players decided to kneel, some players decided to stand, and at the end of the day, we have each other’s backs. Ultimately, we’re here to support one other in any way that we can,” she added. “And that’s what’s amazing about this team,” she said.

Listen:

Her refusal to really explain herself — not that an explanation was necessary — enraged leftists, particularly those into racial essentialism.

This same sentiment erupted again Thursday, with members of America’s notoriously far-left press leading the charge against her.

“I think Carli Lloyd has spoken about why she doesn’t want to kneel during the national anthem. But I’m curious if anyone has asked her why she chose not to take a knee for a minute before kickoff along with every other American player, staff member, and referee,” so-called “sports reporter” Molly Hensley-Clancy tweeted.

Look:

Under Hensley-Clancy’s byline at The Washington Post are endless “woke” stories about “gender disparities,” “equal pay,” “transgender rights,” etc., suggesting she’s more of a “woke” reporter (like ESPN) than a sports reporter.

Her tweet set off a firestorm of agreement from far-leftists demanding that Lloyd be held “accountable” for dissenting from the pack and not embracing their virulent anti-Americanism.

Ultimately, the women’s team won the match against Australia, thus earning itself a bronze medal, in large part thanks to Lloyd’s contributions.

“Lloyd scored two goals, including a record-breaker, to help the U.S. defeat Australia in the bronze medal game,” according to station WCAU.

“Lloyd – playing in her 312th international cap, the second most all time – took one touch off a feed from Lindsey Horan and fired into the side netting to give the U.S. a 3-1 lead in the first minute of extra time,” WCAU reported.

“With that goal, Lloyd became the first U.S. player to score a goal in four different Olympics. It also pulled her into a tie with Abby Wambach as the all-time leading scorer for the U.S. women’s soccer team with nine Olympic goals.”
