With the U.S. women’s national soccer team set to defend their World Cup title next month in France, star player Megan Rapinoe has just assured that all cameras will be on her.
The liberal player known for taking a knee during the national anthem in support of former NFL player and fellow leftist Colin Kaepernick told Yahoo Sports on Monday, “I’ll probably never put my hand over my heart. I’ll probably never sing the national anthem again.”
How quaint.
Rapinoe first took a knee during a Sept. 2016 exhibition match against the Netherlands in Atlanta — U.S. Soccer would pass a rule in 2017 requiring national team members to “stand respectfully during the playing of the national anthems at any event in which the Federation is represented.”
And Rapinoe, an openly gay player, is not pleased.
“Using this blanketed patriotism as a defense against what the protest actually is was pretty cowardly. I think the NFL does it,” she said. “I felt like the statement from U.S. Soccer, and then the rule they made without ever talking to me, that was the same as what the NFL was doing – just to not have the conversation, to try to just stop me from doing what I’m doing instead of at least having a conversation, and trying to figure out a [solution] that makes sense for everyone.”
Calling herself a “walking protest,” Rapinoe is rabidly anti-Trump, calling President Trump a“sexist,” “misogynistic,” “small-minded,” “racist” and “not a good person.”
Along with others, Rapinoe is suing the federation for gender discrimination seeking equal pay as male players, but will grace the national team with her presence to help win another World Cup — her presence being like a personal “F you” to Trump.
“I feel like it’s kind of defiance in and of itself to just be who I am and wear the jersey, and represent it,” Rapinoe told Yahoo Sports. “Because I’m as talented as I am, I get to be here, you don’t get to tell me if I can be here or not. So it’s kind of a good ‘F you’ to any sort of inequality or bad sentiments that the administration might have towards people who don’t look exactly like him. Which, God help us if we all looked like him. Scary. Really scary. Ahh, disturbing.”
She said her “little nod” to Kaepernick’s protest against alleged police brutality and racial oppression “wasn’t super easy for me,” but Rapinoe believes they have “opened a lot of privileged white people’s eyes.”
And the player is down with the struggle against white supremacy.
“I think that was a really good lesson for me: This is what it’s going to take for things to change, norms to change, conventions to change, to try to break down white supremacy and break down racial bias,” she said. “It’s going to take it being hard. For everyone. … That really resonated with me.”
Which also makes her a “walking” white guilt poster.
Her radical, left-wing activism is almost enough to compel some Americans to pull for the opposition next month.
