Governor Ron DeSantis and White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki battled it out in the public forum concerning mask mandates with the Republican governor standing firmly against them while Psaki bluntly told him to “get out of the way.”
The Florida conservative went head-to-head with a reporter on Tuesday over masks being mandated in schools. He called it “deplorable” to suggest students were at fault for spreading COVID because they weren’t wearing masks.
“They are not eligible for the vaccination… you’re blaming the kids saying they weren’t wearing masks, so they’re in the ICU,” DeSantis angrily blasted the reporter. “With all due respect, I find that deplorable to blame a victim who ends up being hospitalized. You don’t know their story. You don’t know what happened with that. This has been a really negative thing throughout this whole thing with some of these experts, some in the media, somebody contracts a highly transmissible airborne virus, and they’re viewed as having done something wrong. And that’s just not the way you do it.”
“We obviously have some people that are not vaccinated that have been admitted to hospitals,” DeSantis remarked. “Are you going to sit there and criticize, or are we going to try to treat and try to help the folks? I’m just sick of the judgmental stuff on some of this stuff. Nobody is trying to get ill here. There’s people that were hermits for a year and a half that wore six masks and did that and still contracted it. So let’s just be real here.”

DeSantis was adamant concerning shutdowns, “In terms of shutting down, we’re not shutting down. We’re going to have schools open. We’re protecting every Floridian’s job in this state. We’re protecting people’s small businesses. These interventions have failed time and time again throughout this pandemic, not just in the United States, but abroad. They have not stopped the spread, and particularly with Delta, which is more transmissible, it didn’t stop it before, it definitely is not going to stop it now. So I think it’s very important that we understand that.”
“I think it’s important to point out because obviously, media does hysteria. You try to fear monger, you try to do this stuff. And when they talk about hospitalizations, our hospitals are open for business. Like I said, in Jackson [Jackson Memorial Hospital] our COVID patients are half of what they said last year. Even in places that have more, COVID patients represent a fraction of the overall hospital beds and I don’t want to see a repeat, that people with heart problems don’t go in [to hospitals],” he added.
Jen Psaki went on the attack Tuesday against DeSantis and Republicans in general who oppose the mask mandate. She was asked directly about DeSantis prohibiting localities and schools from instituting mask mandates during her daily press conference.
She snapped in response to the governor’ stance on masks, “But if you aren’t going to help, if you aren’t going to abide by public health guidance, then get out of the way and let people do the right thing to lead in their communities whether they are teachers, university leaders, private sector leaders, or others who are trying to save lives.”

DeSantis’ Press Secretary Christina Pushaw told Fox News that Psaki’s comments were “strikingly unprofessional.”
“She might want to brush up on the Constitution and learn more about the role of a state governor,” Pushaw wrote in an email to Fox News. “As it turns out, freedom matters. Every day, nearly a thousand Americans relocate to Florida – mostly fleeing from the ever-changing, contradictory COVID restrictions pushed by federal bureaucrats on lockdown states.”
“By contrast, Governor DeSantis keeps up with the latest research and makes data-driven decisions,” she noted. “If he had ‘gotten out of the way’ as Psaki suggested, and let the CDC run our state, many of those lives might have been lost – as we saw with the tragic situation in New York, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, where the age-adjusted death rates are significantly higher than in Florida.”
Psaki made her proclamation one day after she accused DeSantis of choosing “politics” over “public health.”
“Twenty percent of the cases we’re seeing are in Florida,” she claimed during her Monday press briefing.
“There are steps and precautions that can be taken,” she lectured, “including encouraging people to get vaccinated, encouraging people to wear masks, including allowing schools to mandate masks, and allowing kids to wear masks, which is not the current state of play in Florida.”
People took offense to Psaki’s telling DeSantis to “get out of the way”:
Jen Psaki said Ron DeSantis should “get out of the way” because he’s making it “harder for people to put requirements on masks” and sign “asking for vaccination status into law.”
Psaki is openly advocating for authoritarian control over states’ rights. Do not comply.

Unfortunately for Psaki I believe it’s she who is going to have to get out of DeSantis’ way when he paves the path for other states to do the great work that he’s doing.
