Following a County Council meeting on the resurrection of a mask mandate, St. Louis County Health Director Dr. Faisal Khan made accusations that racial slurs were hurled at him and he was physically assaulted when attempting to leave the meeting.
However, police testimony and video footage are casting doubt on his assertions. Although Khan is called names such as “snake” during the meeting, no racial slurs were recorded and police officers claim they did not hear any. The officers also say that Khan was not physically attacked leaving the meeting and video footage appears to back that claim up. What is clear is that Khan flipped everyone off as he left and headed for the elevators.
Khan issued a letter to Council Chair Rita Heard Days claiming that he was subjected to racial slurs and was “shoulder-bumped” and shoved when leaving the council chambers following his statements on support for reimplementing the mask mandate.
He appeared on MSNBC to give his version of events prior to the footage being released. His story was framed sympathetically by the media outlet and Khan found further support from CNN and The Washington Post.

There was ample footage of Khan exiting the chamber after the vote on Tuesday where the mask mandate was overturned in a 5-2 vote. One clip came from a county security camera that showed him being escorted through the lobby by a police officer. It did not show him coming into contact with anyone. In fact, most of the people in the lobby did not even notice him until he was flipping people off.

On Monday, at a council meeting that addressed security and decorum at future gatherings, law enforcement officers testified they didn’t witness what Khan claims to have occurred. They heard no racial slurs and contended that they did not see anyone touch Khan.

Given what is seen in the videos, a number of Khan’s critics have started calling for his removal from his position as County Health Director.
“How do I ever trust anything Dr. Khan says ever again?” Councilman Tim Fitch asked. “With him at the helm of the department, I’m not sure people can.”
Khan did not take part in the meeting on Monday. Instead, he defended his version of events by calling the whole thing a charade.
“I stand by my letter to the council chairperson,” he declared in a text message according to the Post-Dispatch. “This charade of an inquiry is designed only to impugn my character and credibility.”
“One segment of one video or whatever it may be does not capture my experience that evening,” he also told “St. Louis on the Air.”
In the letter to Days, Khan admits to flipping people off. But he justified doing so after allegedly being surrounded, pushed, and attacked with racial slurs. He then lashed out at Fitch accusing him of invoking a “dog-whistle” question and claimed the Republicans heckled him.
County Executive Sam Page, who originally brought back the mask mandate before it was overturned at the council meeting, backed Khan. He called critics “political operatives” and “cherry-picked witnesses.”
Approximately 500 physicians have also indicated their support for Khan.
“So as it turns out, Dr. Kahn was the aggressor. The St. Louis County Dir of Health stoked racial tension based upon a complete lie. Where is the apology of all the garbage that peddled his lies?!?! This should be a crime! #KahnCon,” tweeted Jane Dueker, who is a lobbyist and a frequent critic of County Executive Sam Page, Khan’s boss.

She was joined by many others on Twitter who torched Khan over his spurious claims:
I don’t understand why people still don’t get it that there are cameras everywhere now, especially in a government building.

After hearing all of the recent verbal gymnastics by the Page administration & Health Dept., it reminded me of one of my favorite episodes of Jerry Seinfeld. George told Jerry, “It’s not a lie if YOU believe it.”

County security confirms that Dr. Kahn was not pushed or touched. He was booed and called a liar. After Kahn flipped the crowd off someone asked Kahn if he really did that and said how rude it was. No racial remarks. He got on the elevator without incident. #stlccm

We’ve seen the video inside the Chamber and outside the Chamber. Neither support his libelous allegations. He needs to go. #FireKhan @STLCounty @STLCountyGOP @StLCountyRepub @stlyrs https://t.co/70eYcdwnop

A citizen trying to hold him accountable. How horrible of her. Can you imagine if this was a Republican? I think we all know how this would have gone down. He would be looking forward a new job already. #resignKhan #takeScamwithyou
