Oregon is one of only two U.S. states that prohibit pumping your own gas at a service station. Thus, a Portland-based news outlet has concluded that state residents needed a tutorial as a result of temporary expediency.
Owing to a statewide heat wave in Oregon during which temperatures reached 100 degrees, the Fire Marshall said it was okay for motorists to fill up their tanks on their own at retail gas stations, but — as alluded to above — only through July 30 at 11: 59 p.m. local time.
Anyone who has had the fortune or misfortune of traveling on the Garden State Parkway or the New Jersey Turnpike knows the other, full-service-mandatory state.
Officials in Oregon also suspended the ban on self-serve in late June for the same reason.
This prompted the liberal Oregonian to create the one-minute how-to video embedded below.
Sage advice, for those who are accustomed to relying on pump attendants, includes selecting the proper octane grade for a vehicle, unscrewing the cap, inserting the nozzle all the way in, pulling and holding the trigger until the pump shuts off, along with a reminder not to drive off without putting the cap back on.
Watch:
The footage also demonstrates the credit card swipe technique, but without the captioning that accompanied the above recommendations. The brief video also frowns upon topping off your tank.
As a side note, way back in the day, attendants would also check the oil in your car and wash your windows, rather than just pumping gas, the latter which is perhaps the contemporary fluid, as it were, version of full service. It seems the only place you see that is in vintage films that air on the Turner Classic Movies channel or on other, similar platforms.
While both blue states require full service at the pump, Oregon modified its law about three years ago to allow customers to pump their own gas in some rural areas. The exception applies to counties with 40,000 or fewer residents.
In higher population areas, full-service, attendant-provided gas fill-ups is still the law, which seems counter-intuitive, but again, this is a state run by Democrats.
Social media users are suggesting that the offered guidance is metaphorically running on empty. Here is a sampling from Twitter:
It’s no wonder why we have a govt in Oregon that infantilizes its electorate. The state media reflects its govt. Who doesn’t know how to pump gas or figure it out. This state is doomed.

I thought this was a parody video. It’s not https://t.co/A3BuzLhq5V

LOL… only in Oregon would they think to institute an emergency pump your own gas order 😂

Today I learned that people in Oregon can’t normally pump their own gas. This also explains a lot about Oregon.

Lol. Having lived and traveled through all the states where you can pump your own gas, I find this highly amusing. I never have understood why Oregon does this. Is it a make work program?

Wow this really needs a how to video? Can you show us how to color with some crayons next? I’m embarrassed for you over this

People DO realize how weird it is that your state doesn’t allow you to pump your own gas, right?

Government steps in to solve the problem it created, but only temporarily.

This is embarrassing! My 8 year old pumps gas all the time

Awww thank you Kate Brown for giving us a small crumb. Weird how 48 other states “let” their residents pump their own gas. Glad KB knows best for us.

Why on God’s green earth are stations full service in Oregon? Employing the otherwise unemployable? I thought that’s what government jobs were for.
— Mat (@mathewsmithmd) July 31, 2021
Really, Oregon thinks we’re so stupid we can’t pump our own gas without an instructional video! Do you think we’ve never driven across the border to Washington or to California or to Idaho or to Nevada or any to the other 48 states who have figured out how to pump their own gas!

Note: not safe to operate a cell phone next to a gas pump.

This is not a joke. We can’t pump our own gas in Oregon so many people have literally never done it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ https://t.co/WmV7hI4KAJ
