The National Police Association captured the sentiment of communities across the country suffering from liberal anti-police policies when their spokeswoman called the politically-fueled investigation into the January 6th, 2020 Capitol riot a “dog and pony show” that has no intention of uncovering what really happened that day.
Spokeswoman Betsy Brantner Smith, a retired police sergeant who identifies as conservative, told Fox News on Wednesday that Congress should hear from the thousands of police officers impacted by the riots that ensued and continued through the summer following the murder of George Floyd last year.
Brantner Smith said the entire commission is very one-sided and its existence ignores the realities that officers around the country face every day.
“People need to see that police officers go through horrible things, and Jan. 6 was a horrible thing for some of those officers, but quite frankly, I find this whole Jan. 6 Commission, frankly, a dog and pony show. It doesn’t tell the whole story,” the retired officer criticized.
The NPA and Rasmussen Reports conducted a recent poll that found that two-thirds of likely U.S. voters think Congress should investigate the riots spurred by Floyd’s murder last May.
“Myself, like millions of Americans, sat there watching the testimony thinking, ‘Wait, where are the police officers who appeared – appeared – to let some of the protesters in?” she asked, referring to the bizarre move by many Capitol police officers to stand back and stand down on January 6th.
“Where is the police officer who shot Ashli Babbitt? In fact, why aren’t we talking about Ashli Babbitt? I mean there’s so much more here,” Brantner Smith pointed out. Ashli Babbitt was 35, an Air Force veteran and a Trump supporter who was shot and killed while trying to climb through a broken window leading to the House Chamber on Jan. 6.
The former sergeant’s comments follow the Tuesday testimony of four officers who were at the riot.
Notably, there is much controversy that surrounds law enforcement’s response to the January 6th event. Some have even alleged that federal law enforcement agencies were involved in the planning of the event.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s January 6th commission ignores the sad reality of rising violent crime rates plaguing cities across the country as a result of radical Democrats pulling funding and support from the police.
“I want the American public to hear about that, and based on our survey, the American public wants to hear about that. They want to hear the testimony. You know, we have a Las Vegas police officer who is still paralyzed from the Black Lives Matter riots. We have thousands of police officers around the country who are retiring because of post-traumatic stress because of the riots,” Brantner Smith said, “The 2020 riots, we can’t just say the whole George Floyd thing was bad and that’s what cops have to deal with and then watch these four weeping men talk about their experiences, ignoring thousands and thousands of police officers, ignoring their feelings and their experiences and their injuries,” she explained.
Branter-Smith pointed out that many of the policies implemented during the “defund the police” movement to save black lives have actually done the opposite.
“The veracity of the defund the police movement is directly related to crime in that area. We’re not saving black lives by defunding the police, by reimagining police, by vilifying the police. And that’s what I think is so disingenuous, and I think it’s confusing for people. Because I think a lot of Americans say, of course, black lives matter. I mean, who doesn’t believe that black lives matter? But yet these policies in the name of Black Lives Matter are actually killing more black people, damaging the lives of black people than the police ever have,” the retired police sergeant said, pointing out an inconvenient truth for Democrats.
“We’re reaching a tipping point and I think [Tuesday] kind of woke some people up — I hope. I hope,” she said.
Brantner Smith discussed the toll that the last year has taken on police officers.
“I have some cops who would rather go back to Iraq than continue to work on the street, just because of the massive amounts of blood and bodies and everything they deal with that people don’t see,” she stated.
“It’s taking its toll. We already had a police officer mental health crisis in this country before George Floyd, and now the uptick in police officer suicides is reaching a crisis level,” she said, shining a light on the real impact of these sieges on American cities and policies inhibiting officers from doing their jobs effectively.
There has been an over 40 percent increase in police officers killed on the job compared to last year, according to the Washington Examiner.
This increase mirrors the uptick in violent crime across the country. Democrats and left-wing media have ignored the rising crime and now are ignoring Americans’ calls for action.
A new USA TODAY/Suffolk University/Detroit Free Press poll found that the vast majority of Americans care more about public safety than they do about race relations and police reform.
