The change in California law that downgraded shoplifting from a felony to a misdemeanor, with no prison time attached depending on the dollar amount of the property theft, is having real-world, real-time effects. It is also perhaps giving a new meaning to the term wardrobe malfunction.
Case in point: Two alleged thieves were caught on cell phone video on Monday afternoon nonchalantly sauntering out of a Los Angeles-area TJ Maxx apparently carrying armfuls of merchandise and an oversized giant duffel bag presumably filled with more apparel. They left the scene in a black sedan, and they are still at large.
Voters in the once Golden State passed a 2014 referendum known as Proposition 47 that made public pilfering up to $950 a mere misdemeanor which has prompted discount shopping across California from price-conscious crooks. Shoplifting is reportedly on the rise in the blue state, where Democrats control all the levers of state government.
“If they’re caught, they’re probably given the equivalent of a traffic ticket,” LAPD Sgt. Jerretta Sandoz told CBS Los Angeles. “So it’s not taken seriously.”
“They didn’t even run out; they walked out,” Sgt. Sandoz noted about the Granada Hills TJ Maxx incident. “And so, that’s sending a message that we, the criminals, are winning.”

Last month, a man helped himself to goods in a San Francisco Walgreens while a private security guard stood by watching and videoed the crime.

Rachel Michelin, the president of the California Retailers Association, told Fox 11 Los Angeles that some wrongdoers tabulate their thefts with a calculator to make sure the goods stay at $949 and below.
LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said this week that “in the past, pre-47, and pre these progressive DAs like George Gascon, they’d at least bother to run out. Now they don’t even bother to run out, they just casually stroll out with all the time in the world.”

Compounding the problem as the sheriff implied, Los Angeles District Attorney Gascon is one of several soft-on-crime prosecutors elected around the county with campaign funding assistance from George Soros. The billionaire also reportedly partially financed the successful election campaign for San Francisco DA Chesa Boudin.
The rapid decay in California’s quality of life, which includes crime, homelessness, open drug abuse, high taxes, and various COVID-related restrictions on law-abiding citizens, has led to a recall election for Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom which is scheduled for September 14.
In a Fox News interview, candidate for governor Caitlyn Jenner criticized liberal Democrats in San Francisco for a leniency on crime that has prompted some major retailers to close stores or cut back on hours.
In an editorial published on Monday about the nationwide crime issue, U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton concluded: “These renegade lawyers have turned the criminal justice system into the criminal’s justice system…It should be clear from this litany of failures that the only good Soros prosecutor is a defeated Soros prosecutor. These radicals have no business holding any public office anywhere in our nation. Every single one of them should be recalled, removed, and replaced. It’s very simple: if you don’t want to prosecute crime, you shouldn’t be a prosecutor.”
