Pelosi’s hand-picked committee announces its first public hearing on Jan 6 riot, McCarthy still frozen

Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s special House Committee to “investigate” the events and “root causes” of the January 6th protest on the Capitol will meet for the first time on July 27th, but House Republican Minority leader Kevin McCarthy has yet to name any Republicans to the panel.

After Democrats’ reversal on their year-long “Defund the Police” movement, the first committee hearing will be with police officers who defended the Capitol that day, though a list of names has not yet been released.

“I haven’t made a decision yet, even to appoint. I’m discussing it with my members. I have a real concern, the scope of what we’re looking at,” McCarthy told Fox News Tuesday.

If McCarthy does decide to appoint Republicans to the committee, he will have five slots to fill, but his nominees must first be approved by Pelosi.

Fox News host Laura Ingraham recently asked McCarthy if he anticipates that Pelosi will veto any “strong conservatives” he appoints to the committee. “Pretty much, yes,” McCarthy responded.

It appears that McCarthy has been playing coy when it comes to naming his appointees for that reason. Earlier this month, the Minority Leader told a gaggle of reporters that he is taking it “very seriously” adding, “When I have news on that, I’ll give it to you.”

The select committee is the “least bipartisan committee you can find,” and represents an “impeachment committee,” the Minority Leader told Ingraham last week.

Pelosi does have the ability to appoint all 13 members of the committee if she so chooses, but the requirement that she first consult with McCarthy remains.

Most Republicans see right through the partisan motivation and have no interest in serving on the bogus committee. However, vocal right-wing firebrands Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) have voiced their desire to serve on the committee.

The January march on the Capitol in an attempt to halt the certification of the 2020 presidential election results remained largely peaceful. The media, however, did not miss the opportunity to blow the story up until it barely resembled true events.

Now, we are dealing with the consequences. Earlier this month, Pelosi appointed Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) to the committee. Cheney has earned a reputation as an anti-Trump GOP member because she has long been vocally critical of the former president, even voting to impeach him following the events on January 6th.

“I was shocked that she would accept something from Speaker Pelosi. It would seem to me is, since I didn’t hear from her, maybe she’s closer to her than us,” the Minority Leader said, implying Cheney identifies with Democrats more than her own party.

For her part, Cheney believes it is her duty to Americans to serve on the committee.

“We have an obligation to have a thorough, sober investigation of what happened leading up to January 6 and the attack on the Capitol that day,” Cheney stated.

The only other members of the committee currently appointed are Democrats: Reps. Adam Schiff, Zoe Lofgren, Jamie Raskin, Pete Aguilar, Stephanie Murphy, and Elaine Luria.

McCarthy will reportedly announce his appointees to the committee in the next two weeks, according to ABC News.
