The Washington Post’s intrepid columnist Karen Attiah is asking everyone to quit using the word “fleeing” because it makes Texas Democrats look like “cowards or victims” and she wants people to simply say they “left the state” instead.
“Can we stop saying ‘fleeing’ the state, as if they are cowards or victims? I don’t understand why we can’t just say they left the state. This was a power move. Not a weak one,” Attiah cluelessly tweeted.
The problem with that assertion is they didn’t just “leave” the state. Fifty-eight Democrats made a huge deal of boarding two private jets to fly to DC and declared they would not return until after the end of the session to keep a voter integrity bill from passing. There were photo-ops and press conferences. There was grandstanding and horrible singing as well. There were even cell phone pictures of Democrats eating airport lunches. Rep. Gene Wu hilariously called his picture of eating a salad, “my fist [sic] meal as a fugitive.” “Fugitive” would seem to go hand-in-hand with “fleeing.”
The media and the left have been spinning the mass exodus from the state by Democrats as a noble civil rights protest. Conservatives however see it as abandoning their duties while in office and cowardly in the extreme.

But that is only one of the mounting worries for Texan Democrats. Along with Governor Greg Abbott vowing to arrest the Democrats when they step foot back in the state, the Texas House voted 76-4 to send the Sergeant-of-Arms to detain or arrest fleeing members as well.

“Isn’t this the most un-Texan thing you’ve ever heard — Texans running from a fight? They are quitters. It’s like during a football game or baseball game taking their equipment when they are way behind and just leaving the field. That is not the way that Texans do things,” Abbott told Fox News Monday.
“Once they step back into the state they will be arrested and brought back to the Capitol and we will be conducting business,” he vowed.

Conservative Republicans lined up to proclaim that calling the Democrats “cowards” seemed to be a good fit.
Republican communicator Matt Whitlock tweeted, “There was absolutely nothing powerful about abandoning their taxpayer funded jobs to raise money for their campaigns with this stunt. Not a single one can point to anything in the bill they’re hiding from that would disenfranchise a single voter.”

Eric D of TheMotleyMind waded into the semantics debate as well, stating on Twitter, “Okay. I won’t say the coward democrats who put their tails between their legs and ran instead of doing their jobs “fled”. How about: Texas democrats made a run for it. Texas democrats took flight. Texas democrats took to their heels in terror. Any of those work for you?”

Another user named CP tweeted, “They fled the scene like a Hit & Run! The fact they planned it just makes it premeditated.”

“Hard to imagine a more delusional group of people – thinking that lying about these bills, hopping on a chartered flight, sipping beer, and skipping work is ‘sacrifice,’” Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw tweeted in disgust. “You guys are pathetic. Totally pathetic.”

There was more strong reaction to the Democrats’ perceived cowardice:
They also needed an ID to buy their Miller Lites. https://t.co/ouiMJe1T24

What a bunch of cowards these Texas Democrats are. Cowards are never moral and these losers have abdicated their duty to represent their constituents both Republican and Democrat. @KevinRobertsTX #TexasDemocrats pic.twitter.com/tn3LrbrkGX

They did flee, and so they wouldn't have to lose on a bill they didn't like in a state where the majority of residents don't agree with their philosophies. Take the L on the chin and make a better case for your position next time. https://t.co/IUXB9O6GR8

Because they didn’t just leave the state; they fled it. The fact that if they didn’t flee the state, they likely would have been arrested and brought against their will back to the Capitol emphasizes the fact that they did, indeed, flee the state.
