Former President Donald Trump crushed the anonymous CPAC straw poll, winning it with 70 percent of ballots cast by conservatives and far outdistancing Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis who came in a distant second at 21 percent of the vote.
Trump’s strong showing is a huge improvement from the CPAC event in February when a 2024 GOP primary straw poll showed his support at 55 percent. Republicans made it abundantly clear in this weekend’s presidential nomination poll who it is they want at the helm during the 2024 presidential race. He continually hinted at running but has not committed to it just yet. Conservatives are clamoring for Trump to run and it appears the nomination is his for the taking.
The former president spoke to an adoring crowd of supporters during the event in Dallas, Texas, looking and sounding stronger than ever. There was no hesitation, gaffes, befuddlement, or creepiness associated with his speech as there almost always is with President Joe Biden’s. His speech was the most anticipated and was the highlight of the three-day event. It lasted about 90 minutes.
“I want to personally thank each and every one of you for your incredible support,” Trump declared while giving the keynote address just minutes later. “With the help of everyone here today, we will defeat the radical left, the socialists, Marxists, and the critical race theorists,” Trump vowed. “We will secure our borders, we will stop left-wing cancel culture, we will restore free speech and free elections and we will make America great again.” He added, “The people in this room have been some of the staunchest and fiercest supporters” of “the greatest political movement in the history of our country.”

There were 17 other contenders in the straw poll. DeSantis was the only one to break double digits. None of the others topped one percent in the contest.
But if Trump were to run in 2024, the CPAC straw poll shows….
Trump 70%
DeSantis 21%
Rand Paul 1%
Nikki Haley 1%
Ted Cruz 1%
Tucker Carlson 1%
Kristi Noem 1%
Mike Pompeo 1%
Undecided 1%
Everyone else 0% (includes Hawley, Pence)— Ali Vitali (@alivitali) July 11, 2021
In a second question, Trump was left out of the mix. DeSantis ran away with 68 percent of the vote on that one. Runners-up were not even close. Pompeo came in with 5 percent of the vote and Donald Trump Jr. and Ted Cruz each got 4 percent.
CPAC straw poll once again has FL Gov Ron DeSantis as the favorite among conservative attendees here if Trump doesn’t run in 2024.
DeSantis 68%
Pompeo 5%
Don Jr 4%
Cruz 4%
Noem 3%
Rand Paul 2%
Tucker Carlson 2%
Undecided 2%
Haley, Carson, Pence, Abbott, Hawley, Ivanka 1%— Ali Vitali (@alivitali) July 11, 2021
The other Republicans in the poll included: Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, Rand Paul, Nikki Haley, Tucker Carlson, Kristi Noem, Mike Pompeo, Greg Abbott, Mike Pence, Josh Hawley, Mitt Romney, Larry Hogan, John Kasich, Charlie Baker, Tom Cotton, Marco Rubio, and the category “other.”
Eighty-eight percent of the 1,525 CPAC attendees cast ballots that indicated they strongly approve of Trump’s tenure in the White House. Another 10 percent were somewhat approving of his performance.
The survey was conducted via an online app and was 20 questions long. They included issues such as border security, Critical Race Theory, and cancel culture. But it was the straw poll questions that everyone wanted to see the answers to.
Trump’s speech was given in his classic hard-hitting style. He excoriated voter fraud, nailed the radical left, and called the 2020 election “a disgrace to our nation.”
“We are truly being scorned and disrespected all over the world. Never forget that the radical left is not the majority in this country. We are the majority and it’s not even close,” Trump proclaimed as the fired-up crowd loudly cheered and chanted “USA! USA! USA!”
“There are now two sets of laws in this country — one for the left-wing mob, the rioters and the rampagers … who can do whatever the hell they want to whomever they want to do it. And there is another set of rules for law-abiding conservative Americans who happen to be Republicans, who simply want to speak their minds and exercise their rights to talk about the election,” he stated, while pointing out that the left is actively silencing their political opponents.
The CPAC theme was “America uncanceled.” One of the top issues at the conference was voter fraud and the 2020 election results.
“We were doing so well until the rigged election came along,” Trump noted. “You say election fraud, you get canceled. Unfortunately, this was an election where the person that counts the vote was far more important than the candidate.”
Trump support was strong on Twitter as well:
Trump rocked CPAC! Let the world be on notice that whether or not Trump wants to run again for President…Americans do indeed want Trump to run for President 2024!! The numbers have grown! Demmunism is dead!
