Pelosi opens DC Capitol Police satellite offices in Fla and California

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced Tuesday the expansion of the U.S. Capitol Police Force far beyond DC proper.

Pelosi unveiled the plan to open two Capitol Police satellite regional field offices, one in Florida and one in California, with more to come in what some are calling a massive power overreach. The offices will function “to investigate threats to Members of Congress,” according to acting USCP Chief Yogananda Pittman.

“The new USCP field offices will be in the Tampa and San Francisco areas. At this time, Florida and California are where the majority of our potential threats are,” the USCP reportedly told Fox News.

“The field offices will be the first for the Department. A regional approach to investigating and prosecuting threats against Members is important, so we will be working closely with the U.S. Attorney’s Offices in those locations. More field offices will be opening in the future.” USCP’s statement continued.

The U.S. Capitol Police said in May that threats against members of Congress have more than doubled since last year to 107 percent.

That increase in threats is reportedly one of the reasons for the call to provide more protection for members of Congress, even when they are back in their home districts.

The move to expand also comes as the USCP department has worked to implement recommendations following the January 6th riot at the Capitol.

Reviews from the Government Accountability Office, the Capitol Police Office of Inspector General, and a House panel found several reasons for failure that day including outdated equipment, a failure to follow up on intelligence tips or widely distributed information, and security planning.

“Buying long-overdue helmets and shields, and accepting report recommendations for training doesn’t show leadership, it shows a desire to escape the consequences of the very real leadership collapse that day,” union chair Gus Papathanasiou said in an effort to demand accountability.

“Individual officers fought hard on January 6th and succeeded in protecting every single member of Congress and their staff. We did our jobs. Our leaders failed us,” Papathanasiou asserted.

Democrats in leadership like Pelosi have been accused of slow-rolling the response to the threats on January 6 that the intelligence departments had already warned members about in a twisted way to capitalize on “domestic terror.”

“Internally, the Department has vastly increased the information shared with sworn officers about obtained intelligence and event planning. Externally, USCP leadership has increased intelligence sharing and collaboration between all of our local, state and federal law enforcement partners as well increased our partnership within the intelligence community and Congressional stakeholders,” the USCP detailed their collaboration progress.

The force is also increasing staff for its Dignitary Protection Division and has grown its coordination with local law enforcement in an effort to better protect members of Congress while they are home in their districts.

The choice of California and Florida as the test run states for this project should come as no surprise. The states are home to two of the largest congressional delegations including Speaker Pelosi and Leader Kevin McCarthy.

Some have called on local leadership like Governor DeSantis to formally refuse the aid.

While hardworking Americans are focused on the labor shortage, continued signs of inflation, and rising gas prices thanks to energy insecurity created by Biden administration policy, Democrats continue to distract from the real issues at hand.
