The alleged identity of the anonymous police officer who shot and killed Jan. 6 protester Ashli Babbitt is being circulated on social media as Lt. Michael Byrd, who has reportedly been in hiding and under protection by authorities since that fateful day.
A video is making the rounds on the internet which adds to the speculation that Byrd was the triggerman, but the identity of the shooter has still not been announced.
Independent journalist Tayler Hansen is claiming that Byrd was the one who shot Babbitt. He noted that Byrd’s presence on the internet has almost entirely been scrubbed.
Capitol Sergeant at Arms Timothy Blodgett seemed to agree in his testimony that Byrd was at the scene of the shooting that day when responding to questioning about the critical moments. “We were in close contact, that situation where officer Byrd was at the door when Ms. Babbitt was shot,” he stated in the hearing under oath. “It was our Sergeant at Arms employee who rendered the aid to her.”

He also claims his Sergeant at Arms employee rendered aid, he is lying. His employee touched her once, watched her bleed out, then contaminated the crime scene. https://t.co/M8uCWRKkfQ pic.twitter.com/lHxIfN0tz6

The officer has not officially been identified as Babbitt’s shooter. However, according to OANN, Capitol police released a statement defending him, claiming that “the lieutenant did not know if protesters were armed” and he “believed his life was in danger.”
According to some reports, Babbitt’s shooter was said to be wearing a beaded bracelet that looked like one Byrd wore as well.

In mid-June, the issue was also discussed by Fox News host Tucker Carlson who was joined by Babbitt’s husband Aaron Babbitt and attorney Terrell Roberts. Roberts said that he believed Babbitt’s shooter was the same one who carelessly left his loaded handgun in a public restroom on Capitol Hill in 2019. That officer was purportedly identified as Lt. Michael Byrd.
“Mr. Roberts, let me ask you, there are reports online, that’s incredible I don’t know if they’re true, that the Capitol Hill police officer who shot Ashli Babbitt, I’m not going to mention the name, was the same officer that left his loaded handgun in a public men’s room on the Capitol. Do you believe that is the officer, it seems like a very reckless person, who shot and killed Ashli Babbitt on January 6th?” Carlson asked the attorney.
“That’s my belief. That’s my belief,” Roberts responded, though he did not provide solid proof that Byrd was the shooter.

Roberts commented on why he thought the shooter’s identity remains hidden. “I think one of the reasons why they are hiding his identity is they don’t have a good explanation for the shooting,” he remarked. “I think that if Ashli Babbitt had been brandishing a firearm and she was shot, the officer would be identified by now and they’d be pinning a medal on him. So I don’t think they have a good explanation for the shooting and why they have not identified him.”
Former President Trump also demanded that the officer’s identity be revealed.
“Who shot Ashli Babbitt? Who shot Ashli Babbitt? Who? Who shot Ashli Babbitt? We all saw the hand, we saw the gun. I spoke to her mother the other day, an incredible woman. She’s just devastated like it happened yesterday. Devastated,” Trump proclaimed at a rally in Sarasota, Florida on Saturday. “You know, if that were on the other side, the person that did the shooting would be strung up and hung. Now they don’t want to give the name, they don’t want to give, but people know the name, people know where he came from, and it’s a terrible thing.”
“Six months ago today, Ashli Babbitt, a 110-pound woman with nothing in her hands, not a rock, not a stick or a bat, was shot dead by a still unknown Capitol Hill police officer,” Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) stated in a press release. “And now President Trump has joined me in seeking the truth.”

Neither Trump nor Gosar has confirmed the alleged identity of the shooter.
