Maxine Waters joins in 4th of July-bashing: ‘Equal to what? Only white men?’

U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) went on an anti-American rant over the 4th of July, railing against the Declaration of Independence and the concept that all men are created equal, twisting it into a racial issue.

The congresswoman railed against slavery being in existence when the nation was founded and then veered into current events including the Supreme Court, voting laws, and the death of George Floyd and other black individuals involving police officers. She claimed that the Founding Fathers did not consider black people when they created the country and that they were somehow racist in their intentions.

“[T]he Declaration of Independence says all men are created equal. Equal to what? What men? Only white men?” Waters tweeted on Sunday bringing race into the mix and stirring division and animosity. “Isn’t it something that they wrote this in 1776 when African Americans were enslaved? They weren’t thinking about us then, but we’re thinking about us now!”

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness,” Waters stated quoting the Declaration of Independence and insinuating that recent events indicate otherwise.

She went on to list “voter suppression laws” in 17 states, seemingly referring to a report produced by the Brennan Center for Justice claiming that those states have passed laws restricting the ability to freely vote. At issue are topics such as updating voter registration rolls, the use of voter ID, and absentee ballot security measures. She also noted that the Supreme Court “gutted” Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act.

For added racial emphasis, Waters listed George Floyd, Michael Brown, Breonna Taylor, Tamir Rice, and Sandra Bland as examples of those who have died in altercations with the police.

Waters has represented her California district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1991, currently serving her 15th term. Despite her continual race-baiting and charges of corruption, she has been reelected over and over again.

Waters was one of several Democrats over the holiday weekend to bring up racial issues on social media in connection with Independence Day. One of the loudest voices was Squad member Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) who tweeted on Sunday that American freedom only applies to white people. She claimed that American land was “stolen” and that black people “still aren’t free.”

Former MSNBC anchor Touré also took to social media to denigrate the holiday. “F**k Fourth of July: The only independence day I recognize is Juneteenth,” he snarled. “F*ck Independence Day. Not only were we not free, the whole reason the Colonies wanted independence was because Britain was moving toward abolishing slavery. Why would Black people celebrate a day so wrapped up in our enslavement?”

While not being quite as explicit, President Biden seemed to softly echo their sentiments on Sunday.

“I’ve long said America is unique. Unlike every other nation on Earth, we were founded on an idea. We hold these truths to be self-evident that all people are created equal and have right, among them, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” he intoned.

“And while we have never fully lived up to the words but we never give up on them. They continue to animate us and remind us at our best, we as Americans believe in honor and dignity. Treat everyone with dignity and respect, giving hate no safe harbor.  We are part of something so much bigger than ourselves. We stand as a beacon to the world. It’s a code uniquely American, it’s who we are,” the president proclaimed.

The president couldn’t resist taking a swipe at Republicans and referring to their blockage of the For the People voting rights bill. That bill would have handed complete control of elections to the federal government. Democrats contend that it had more to do with making voting accessible to minorities and poorer communities.
