D.C. Mayor Bowser blew up Twitter, deleted 4th of July tweet that included topless Wendy’s girl

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser blew up Twitter for the 4th of July after allegedly deleting a tweet that featured a topless version of the iconic Wendy’s girl mascot flanked by Ronald McDonald and Colonel Sanders in a risque anime meme.

Bowser has neither confirmed nor denied that the tweet came from her actual account, swirling rumors even more over the incident and lending the accusation credibility. According to ProPublica, the tweet was reportedly up for about one minute before being deleted. Many on social media are now debating whether it was really her tweet or not. It appears to be legitimate. Regardless, the tweet is being roasted at the expense of Mayor Bowser and possibly a hapless intern.

On July 4, the tweet was shared by a user named Kleo on Twitter. It purportedly came from Bowser’s Twitter account and innocuously read, “Thanks for joining us in the Palisades today DC!” There were two photo-op images of the Independence Day event. The first was a group photo of those who attended. The second showed the mayor posing with someone during the event.

Two pictures were also included that were very strange. The first one was of singers The Weeknd and Doja Cat with a promo picture of an upcoming album. The second was much more problematic as it depicted the animated fan art of Wendy’s, McDonald’s, and Kentucky Fried Chicken.

A number of Twitter users claimed to have taken a screenshot of the tweet before it was deleted. But the debate rages on over its authenticity regardless of that evidence and the fact that the deletion was recorded.

Many posited that an intern was guilty of the faux pas and then argued over whether they were fired or not for posting the tweet. It is highly likely that Bowser has such an intern as it is common for politicians to assign their social media accounts to be handled by other individuals.

Recently, an intern from HBO Max made a flub that was seized upon by many, including former Bill Clinton intern Monica Lewinsky. She tried to alleviate some of that intern’s chagrin by tweeting, “dear intern: it gets better. ❤️ ps. don’t wear a beret for awhile, k?” That was a humorous reference to the former intern’s beret that she wore in an iconic photo while posing next to the Clintons. The practice of having an intern post for a celebrity, media outlet, or politician is very common these days.

One Twitter user joked, “me if I was mayor bowser’s intern.” They then shared a number of possible pictures if that were the case.

“Literally the best thing Mayor Bowser has ever done,” a user wrote. “Press F to pay respects to Mayor Bowser’s social media intern who is probably not having an awesome Independence Day,” yet another quipped.

“At least Mayor Bowser likes Doja cat!!!” proclaimed one fan. “Mayor Bowser now has my vote,” stated another.
