Arizona GOP state Rep. Quang Nguyen angrily schooled Democratic legislator Daniel Hernández after Hernández used the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol building as a backdrop to sound off that white nationalism was a greater threat to national security than communism.
“We keep hearing about the threat of communism…you know what’s a bigger threat? White nationalism…,” Hernández said, referring to the Capitol breach as an insurrection.
However, the normally reserved Nguyen, who was barely a teenager when he and what was left of his family narrowly escaped North Vietnamese forces overran Saigon in 1975, unloaded his frustration on Hernández.
“White nationalism didn’t drown 250 Vietnamese in the South China Sea. The communists did,” he responded.
“White nationalism did not execute 87,000 South Vietnamese at the Fall of Saigon, communists did. White nationalism did not put me here, communism did,” Nguyen said. “Don’t take it lightly.”
Nguyen said that unless schools take the responsibility of teaching the dangers of communism to our children, our country will be lost, adding that Hernández’s comments and comparison of so-called white nationalism and communism were unacceptable and showed a lack of intelligence.
The exchange came as Arizona lawmakers were discussing legislation that would expose school children to stories of people who fled communism.
The new requirement, which was passed by the House on June 25, was proposed by Republican state Rep. Judy Burges, to prepare students to be civically knowledgeable and responsible adults, according to The Epoch Times.
Schools will also be required to teach a detailed and comparative discussion on communism and totalitarianism.
Meanwhile, the state board of education must develop comprehensive education standards that include instruction on the original intent of the nation’s founding documents and principles of the United States, the expectations that U.S. citizens in supporting and defending the “blessings of liberty” outlined in the Constitution.
The education board must also create a list of oral history resources that include first-person accounts of people who fled other nations, which compare the governing philosophies of those parent nations to the U.S.
“We have governments like the communist Chinese government, that their stated goal is to be the world’s sole and only superpower, and that they will achieve that goal through any means possible,” Republican state Rep. Jake Hoffman said
Some, however, didn’t feel that the communist ideology was as big a threat as white nationalism.
Nguyen, who witnessed the horrors of communism throughout much of the Vietnam War, and lost many of his cousins in the conflict, shared his personal and emotionally heart-wrenching story with lawmakers and spectators in the House chamber.
Several people in the gallery, whom Nguyen believed were school teachers, gave him a thumbs down, Fox News reported.
“You’re standing up there and giving me the thumbs down because I’m sharing my family’s story with you. It was appalling to even see that,” Nguyen said.
The legislation comes just days after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed an executive order requiring schools to teach students “the evils of communism and totalitarian ideology,” and signed House Bill 5 into law, which calls for the Florida Department of Education to develop a curriculum that teaches the rights of citizens guaranteed under the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
Nguyen has voiced his concerns on Twitter as well where he has shared the personal side of his fight against communism.
