AOC bill puts focus on ethnicity, race and sexuality of Biden appointees so they won’t be ‘too white’

After calling out a bipartisan group of senators for being “too white” radical lawmaker Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), unveiled a bill Tuesday to ensure Biden administration appointees are ethnically diverse.

The Political Appointments Inclusion and Diversity (PAID) Act would require the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to publish a summary reporting the overall demographics of political appointees. While this information is already available to the public, the legislation is designed to make it more accessible, thereby putting the squeeze on the administration to employ diverse hiring practices.

While the report would keep the identities of political appointees anonymous, it would include self-identified data on race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, tribal affiliation, disability, veteran status, and age.

The bill’s introduction comes on the heels of sharp criticism from Ocasio-Cortez concerning the bipartisan infrastructure plan reached last week, considered a major win in terms of proving Congress can still work across party lines by most, but the congresswoman claimed the group was not “inclusive” enough.

“The diversity of this ‘bipartisan coalition’ pretty perfectly conveys which communities get centered and which get left behind when leaders prioritize bipartisan dealmaking over inclusive lawmaking (which prioritizes delivering the most impact possible for the most people),” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter.

“This is why a bipartisan pkg alone isn’t acceptable. The exclusion & denial of our communities is what DC bipartisan deals require. That’s how you get GOP on board : don’t do much/any for the working class & low income,or women, or poc communities, or unions,etc. We must do more,” the New York Democrat continued in her critique.

Ocasio-Cortez went on to claim that bipartisan deals often solely benefit “corporations & structural racism.”

The Biden administration, for its part, has taken action to increase diversity within the federal workforce.

President Joe Biden recently signed an executive order that would require OPM and the Office of Management and Budget to foster and advance the employment opportunities of minority, disadvantaged and underrepresented groups like people of color, women, first-generation professionals and immigrants, individuals with disabilities, LBGTQ+ individuals, Americans from rural areas, older Americans, and others.

The EO orders agencies to review how underrepresented demographics are represented within their workforce in the next 100 days. It also encourages agencies to set up chief diversity officer roles.

Many are concerned that the “woke” politics bleeding into areas like hiring decisions will prioritize candidates based on characteristics like race, sexual orientation, and politics instead of their qualification for the role itself.
