Broadcaster and author Roger Bennett appeared Tuesday on “CBS This Morning” to promote his new book, (Re)Born in the USA, highlighting his love for America. Co-host Gayle King proceeded to embarrassingly bring up a passage from the book talking about his “tiny child penis.”
Following Bennett’s emotionally stirring and patriotic segment on leaving Britain and becoming an American in a love letter to his new country, he was blind-sided by King: “So beautiful,” she coyly stated, before hitting the author with an extremely awkward statement, “something that’s not so beautiful, you write on page 56 you were a late bloomer with a tiny child penis that looked like a ball spigot.” Bennett handled the slap by trying to inject humor into the humiliating moment: “Some things don’t change Gayle! Some things don’t change. America can change many things.” Awkward and strained laughter ensued from the co-hosts.
Bennett is heavily promoting his new book on a media tour to celebrate America. He is originally from Liverpool and co-hosts “Men in Blazers,” NBC’s popular sports show and podcast. He’s also a frequent contributor to “Morning Joe.” Bennett’s new book details his journey in becoming a naturalized citizen of the United States and the things he loves about America.
At the beginning of the show on Tuesday, a pre-taped segment of Bennett reading passages from his new book aired. He read from his writing as he stood before the Statue of Liberty, professing his love and admiration of American culture. Listed were icons such as John Cougar Mellencamp and the Beastie Boys. It was an impassioned patriotic expression of love for his new country just before Independence Day.

Bennett actually had tears in his eyes as the segment concluded. Co-host Tony Dokoupil noticed the raw emotion of the former Brit. “Quite a lot to watch that,” Bennett admitted, humorously comparing it to the first half of “Scarface.”
I wrote a book. A love letter to the United States. Always joked I love America more than Kenny Powers loves America. This is the story of that Love. I would appreciate it more than I can say if you pre-order this bad boy https://t.co/mPeqhlp3Uz Courage 🇺🇸 pic.twitter.com/RJFJuVn2O3

That made King’s tactless reference to the “tiny child penis” excerpt even more cringe-worthy and tasteless. The timing was severely off and it appeared that King was somehow trying to keep it funny. It was also rather insulting to an obviously heartfelt expression of patriotism from Bennett. She tried to regain her balance by noting how touching his book was. It didn’t work.
But Bennett took it in stride and recovered nicely. He spoke of not only famous American icons, but television shows that he loves as well. Bennett seems truly and genuinely enamored with his new country.
Gayle King knows. “It’s Coming Home”
Thanks to all at @CBSThisMorning in front of, and behind camera, for having me on to launch my book in such a joyous way 🇺🇸 pic.twitter.com/QOFuxiNVyr— roger bennett (@rogbennett) June 29, 2021
“If you have stood in a courtroom, 162 people from 46 countries and you say the oath of allegiance, and you look left and right, you see people who have crawled through deserts, who’ve survived civil war, who have escaped turmoil driven by the idea of America, then you know that that idea of America in the world shines so bright, drives people, gives them incredible courage and joy,” Bennett proclaimed. “And that’s my message for you on Independence Day.”
Other than King’s strange reference from the book, the segment is a poignant testimony to the love of one’s country. Plus, it will probably sell a lot of books for the author.
