President Joe Biden broke traditional protocol on Monday when, during a press conference following a NATO summit, he slammed the Republican Party and former President Donald Trump.
This is despite the fact that the Biden campaign criticized Trump in 2019 for making similar remarks.
In the past, world leaders have observed the unspoken policy of leaving politics at home when on foreign soil. This unspoken guideline appears to be outdated, evidenced by Biden’s statements to the press yesterday.
The controversial hit came after a reporter asked Biden how he has been able to reassure allies at the summit that the U.S. will be a reliable and stable partner moving forward, citing the January 6 Capitol protest and Trump’s continued hold on the Republican Party.

Biden began his response saying, “The leaders I’m dealing with in NATO and the G-7 are leaders who know our recent history, know generically the character of the American people and know where the vast center of the public stands.”
He continued, appearing to reference January 6th: “We’re a decent, honorable nation. And I think that they have seen things happen, as we have, that shocked them and surprised them that could have happened. But I think they, like I do — the American people are not going to sustain that kind of behavior.”
Biden hammered Republicans for what he deemed their ownership of the January 6th riot, calling it a “consequence of President Trump’s phony populism”.
Biden continued his hit saying it’s “disappointing that so many of my Republican colleagues in the Senate, who I know know better, have been reluctant to take on, for example, an investigation because they’re worried about being primaried.”
The president claimed that the Republican Party “is vastly diminished in numbers. The leadership of the Republican Party is fractured. And the Trump wing of the party is the bulk of the party,” adding that it accounts for a “significant minority of the American people.”
This is a flagrant lie for the convenience of a narrative on Biden’s part. The latest Gallup poll shows that 29 percent of Americans consider themselves Republicans while 33 percent consider themselves Democrats. Four percent hardly accounts for a “significant” minority. A majority of 35 percent consider themselves independent.
Biden then highlighted the importance of “progress” and “why it’s so important that [he] succeed[s] in [his] agenda.”
He concluded, saying the proof will be in where the country is six months from now. He posited that there would be “a coalescing of a lot of Republicans,” particularly among younger Republicans coming up in the party.
Biden’s hypocritical hit on the GOP comes after his campaign criticized Trump during his trip to Japan on Memorial Day in 2019.
Trump said he “smiled” when North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un labeled Biden a “low IQ individual,” followed by other insults.
Biden’s deputy campaign manager, Kate Bedingfield, told Fox News at the time that the comments were “beneath the dignity of the office.”
Bedingfield continued, saying “to side repeatedly with a murderous dictator against a fellow American and former Vice President speaks for itself. And it’s part of a pattern of embracing autocrats at the expense of our institutions — whether taking Putin’s word at face value in Helsinki or exchanging ‘love letters’ with Kim Jong-un.”
It’s a wonder that sentiment is no longer being echoed by the Democratic Party. Mind you, Biden and his team repeatedly make calls for faux unity, but actions speak louder than words.
