Vice President Kamala Harris visited CentroNía, a bilingual early childhood education school in Washington, DC, on Friday where she posed with students and pushed “free” child care.
When one child told Harris that he thought she was a boy, she responded: “I’m the first vice president who’s a girl, not a boy … But I won’t be the last one.”
In a classroom of preschool-aged children, the students gave Harris drawings and held a singalong in her honor.
The visit to the school comes amid Harris facing mounting criticism for not visiting the border and her snapping at reporters when questioned about it.

Harris is pushing $15 billion in grants to support child care programs. She proclaimed that the Biden administration is determined “to build a future that is worthy of the aspiration and the ambition of our children.” She is calling for all those eligible to take advantage of the tax credits that will be paid monthly.
“Our children must be at the center of our priorities and our public policies,” Harris declared. “It is a smart thing to do. And it is the right thing to do.”

She announced that June 21 will now be Child Tax Credit Awareness Day under Biden’s COVID-19 relief package that is also known as the American Rescue Plan.
“We’re going to join with community organizations, faith-based groups, and local elected officials to get the word out about how folks can receive the credit. And we would love for you all to join us with that,” Harris told the audience.
The credit has been raised from $2,000 to $3,000 per child up to 17-years-old. It provides $3,600 for kids under 6 as well. In July, the credits will be issued as monthly payments through the end of the year.
Low- and no-income families will also be eligible to receive the full tax credit. It previously applied only to those who paid enough in taxes to receive the credit. Harris remarked that it was “not logical” that low-income families did not qualify for the credit in the past.
The vice president noted that the American Families Plan would also include a provision that would cap the amount a middle-income family would have to pay for the care of young children to 7% of their income and make child care more accessible to working parents.
Harris claimed the administration will “lift half of America’s children out of poverty,” a goal she claims is one of the things she most enjoys about being vice president. However, that statement is misleading. Half of America’s children are not living in poverty. According to ChildrenDefense.org, 1 in 6 children in the United States were living in poverty as of 2018.
The Vice President’s visit to the school came just hours after she snapped at a Univision reporter who had the temerity to ask her if she would eventually visit the border following reports that Biden will be sending USAID Administrator Samantha Power to Guatemala and Mexico next week.

In a tense exchange, Harris stated: “I’ve said I’m going to the border, and I…”
Then she was cut off by journalist Ilia Calderon, who is an anchor with Univision, via video link: “When are you going?”
Harris continued speaking anyway: “The administration has asked…” The vice president then paused over Calderon’s question and snapped: “I’m not finished.”
It wasn’t the first time that Harris has gotten annoyed by a reporter asking her about the border lately. NBC anchor Lester Holt also cornered her on the subject.
“At some point, you know, we are going to the border,” she defensively stated. “We’ve been to the border. So this whole thing about the border. We’ve been to the border. We’ve been to the border.”
Holt replied: “You haven’t been to the border.”
“And I haven’t been to Europe,” Harris quipped and then tried to laugh it off. “And I mean, I don’t understand the point that you’re making. I’m not discounting the importance of the border.”
