Actress and left-wing activist Alyssa Milano suggested Tuesday she may run for Congress in 2024, an announcement that drew no small amount of derision and mocking on social media.
“I’m looking at California’s 4th District to potentially run against [Rep. Tom] McClintock (R),” she said in an interview, referencing the incumbent Republican lawmaker.
“I would love to maybe consider flipping that seat blue,” she told ITK. “It’s going to take someone with, I think, name recognition and deep pockets to be able to run against McClintock, and so I’m considering it. I’m basically gathering information right now, speaking to different consultants, speaking to the community.”
McClintock won reelection to his seat last year with 56 percent of the vote; then-President Donald Trump defeated Democratic nominee Joe Biden in his district by nine points, The Hill reported.
Milano just wrapped up shooting on a Netflix film and is considering several more projects including a reboot of the 1980s hit sitcom “Who’s the Boss?” in which she starred along with Tony Danza and Judith Light. She added that she will likely make a decision on a political future after the 2022 elections.
“Before I run, obviously I can’t do both at the same time,” she said, regarding her ongoing acting career. “So it’s just really going to be about timing.”
Milano has talked before about running for political office. She said in 2018 that getting into politics is part of a “10-year-plan” for after her children got older. And in 2019, she said making the transition to politics is “something that I think about,” according to The Hill.
The actress took McClintock to task last month after he voted against an Asian hate crimes bill.
“If America were such a hate-filled, discriminatory, racist society filled with animus against Asian Americans, how do you explain the remarkable success of Asian Americans in our country?” he said on the House floor in March.
“What should make us all proud as Americans is the fact that Asian Americans have the highest median income of any ethnic group in America, including white Americans,” McClintock added. “Median income for Asian Americans is 38% higher than the national median.”
Milano responded on Twitter: “Congressman McClintock was one of the 63 republicans to oppose Asian Hate Crimes bill. This is my Congressman. Should I run against him?”

The host of the “Sorry Not Sorry” podcast is familiar to members of Congress; in 2018, she joined in protests against the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and in 2019 she testified in support of the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.
Nevertheless, her announcement drew a lot of parody online.
“Yes, please run against McClintock, @Alyssa_Milano. You’re 0-4 in people you’ve endorsed and you’re going to run in a red district during an [sic] presidential election year with #PresidentSilverAlert or #HeelsUp as the candidate. Also, you settle with the IRS yet?” one user wrote.
“Just what @HouseDemocrats need: Another vapid, self-absorbed, America-hating dope to add to the caucus,” wrote another.
“Is it just me or does absolutely *no one* want Alyssa Milano to run for office in 2024?” said another Twitter user.
