Vice President Kamala Harris took a surprisingly Trumpian stance on illegal immigration at a joint press conference with Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei in her first international visit Monday.
Radical Democrat darling, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a champion for open borders, said the one-eighty from Harris was “disappointing”.
Harris took the hardline after Giammattei pointed to Biden administration policies like family reunification, a root cause of human trafficking, as harbingers for the U.S. illegal immigration crisis.
Harris spoke during a press conference after privately meeting with Giammattei.
“I want to emphasize that the goal of our work is to help Guatemalans find hope at home, at the same time I want to be clear to folks in this region who are thinking about making the dangerous trek to the United States-Mexico border — do not come, do not come,” the vice president said.
Ocasio-Cortez posted her reaction on Twitter:
This is disappointing to see.
First, seeking asylum at any US border is a 100% legal method of arrival.
Second, the US spent decades contributing to regime change and destabilization in Latin America. We can’t help set someone’s house on fire and then blame them for fleeing. https://t.co/vADyh5H0bw

It would be helpful if the US would finally acknowledge its contributions to destabilization and regime change in the region.
Doing so can help us change US foreign policy, trade policy, climate policy, & carceral border policy to address causes of mass displacement & migration.

The vice president’s warning to those thinking of coming here illegally marks an about-face from her previous statements.
In 2018, Harris visited the southern border and criticized the Trump administration’s “zero-tolerance policy” on immigration.
This time last year, she raised her hand on stage during a presidential debate in support of free healthcare for illegal immigrants.
Conservative Twitter user Comfortably Smug pointed out an old tweet from Kamala stating, “Say it loud, say it clear, everyone is welcome here. #NoBanNoWall”, followed by the video of her yesterday urging those considering illegal immigration to the United States to stay home.

President Biden positioned Harris as his border czar months ago to handle the growing immigration crisis. Today, 139 days into the administration, will mark Harris’ first visit to Mexico to address the crisis after border detentions surged to a 21-month high in April of more than 178,000.
Republicans were not shy in criticizing Harris for her convenient flip-flop:
