‘What, he didn’t ask about the cat?’ Bootlicking Brian Stelter asks Psaki what the press gets ‘wrong’

On Sunday, CNN host Brian Stelter was mercilessly mocked for asking White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki what the press gets “wrong” in its coverage of President Joe Biden.

“The White House press secretary faces some unique challenges,” Stelter fawningly opened up with on “Reliable Sources.” He noted later that Psaki is a former CNN contributor.

“Busy summer ahead – infrastructure, election reform. What does the press get wrong when covering Biden’s agenda? When you watch the news, when you read the news, what do you think we get wrong?” Stelter stunningly asked of Psaki.

“Some of our muscles have atrophied, and there isn’t a lot of memory, recent memory or longer memory, on how long it takes to get legislation forward or how messy the process of negotiating and the process of getting legislation across the finish line can be,” Psaki noted in regards to the impatience of the press and their criticism of Biden.

“So we know, we understand everybody is always looking for a deadline, a timeline, things like that,” she continued. “I don’t know if that’s the press getting it wrong,” she stated in what seemed to be a scripted back and forth. “I’ll leave you to the critique of that, Brian.”

Psaki added, “Sometimes we forget how strange the last four years were, and when we return to a place where democracy is working — where we’re talking with Democrats and Republicans, where we’re trying to get bills and legislation passed — it feels foreign. But this is actually how it’s supposed to work.”

Various media and conservative outlets were not impressed with Stelter’s less-than-hard hitting interview. Newsbusters news analyst Nicholas Fondacaro slammed the exchange: “Bootlicking: On Today’s so-called ‘Reliable Sources,’ CNN’s Brian Stelter begins his interview with WH Press Sec. Jen Psaki by asking her ‘what does the press get wrong?’ He then follows up by asking her about her feelings, noting that she seems frustrated sometimes.”

Others called the groveling by Stelter “subservient” and basically propaganda: Fox News contributor Mollie Hemingway was blunt: “Our corrupt media are absolutely nothing more than propagandists and should be treated as such.”

Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer castigated the CNN host: “@cnn ‘s Brian Stelter to White House Press Secretary ‘are we doing a good enough job of pushing the White House’s talking points…can we do better at it?'”

Journalist Glenn Greenwald shredded Stelter for both his and the leftist media’s infatuation with Psaki, opening with “Beat me, Jen! Tell me how to be better.”

Greenwald didn’t let up either: “Somehow Brian Stelter managed to take his humiliatingly ‘tell-me-why-I’m-bad-Jen’ start to his interview and get even more sycophantic from there. Even Psaki had to be thinking: ‘oh my god, the intensity of his adoration is…. uncomfortable.'”

The two have been going back and forth on Twitter, concluding in Greenwald telling Stelter to “lay off the potatoes.”

Stelter would go on to ask Psaki to give further advice to journalists and to provide “guidance” to reporters so they would “stay close to the truth in this world of lies.”

Lying was a theme for Stelter during the softball interview: “Five months in, do you feel like that you’ve made any progress with … defeating the lies?” and “Given the craziness we’re seeing from the GOP, what kind of country is this going to be?”

There was one relevant question that Stelter asked during the interview having to do with Biden not having held a single solo press conference. Psaki did not actually answer that question and only stated that he “takes questions several times a week.”

There were no questions concerning current events that directly impact the nation such as the border crisis, the cyber hacks, or issues dealing with the pandemic and Dr. ANthony Fauci in connection to thousands of his emails that surfaced last week. In fact, there was no meat to the interview at all except that the White House is working with social media to allegedly “crackdown” on misinformation.

Stelter has been a blatant proponent of the Biden administration from the beginning. When Psaki was chosen as press secretary and subsequently promised to provide only accurate information, Stelter immediately tweeted out his adoration: “How refreshing.”

Later, on Twitter, Stelter defended his interview from attacks by both sides of the political spectrum:

Stelter’s interview of Psaki is indicative of why CNN is losing its audience. He is hemorrhaging viewership, averaging only 836,000 viewers in May. That is a 9 percent drop from April and a 53 percent drop from January.
