According to Ben Rhodes, one of former President Obama’s speechwriters, Obama equated white people’s feelings towards former President Trump with black people’s sentiments in connection to the O.J. Simpson acquittal.
Rhodes claims in his new book “After the Fall,” that Obama stated: “Trump is for a lot of white people what O. J.’s acquittal was to a lot of black folks – you know it’s wrong, but it feels good.” The book takes the bleak perspective that the United States and the world, in general, have become more authoritarian in nature.
The former speechwriter was with the Obama administration from 2009 until 2017. He reportedly referred to Obama’s comment as “black humor.”
Simpson was an NFL superstar who was acquitted of murdering his wife and her friend in a high-profile murder trial in 1995. The nation was polarized between those who believed Simpson was innocent and those who were certain of his guilt. The black community celebrated his acquittal but there was widespread disapproval among many Americans in general regardless of race.

Polls at that time allegedly showed that 70 percent of the black community believed that Simpson had not murdered his wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman. But 75 percent of white Americans staunchly disagreed with that same verdict.
Following his acquittal, two years later Simpson was found responsible for the vicious stabbings in a civil suit.
Rhodes’ book covers what he sees as racism in the United States. It also addresses injustice across the world that he claims is on the rise. He asserts that America is to blame. Most of that blame is laid off on those who elected Trump in 2016 and the former president himself. Rhodes draws parallels between Trump’s administration and authoritarian regimes in countries such as Russia and China.
“America had helped shape the world we lived in before descending into the cesspool of the Trump years,” Rhodes bitterly contends. “We now had a government that was busy radicalizing a huge swath of American society, with pockets of the country turning to violent white supremacy or a QAnon conspiracy theory positing that America is secretly run by a cabal of child sex traffickers.”
“The invasion of Iraq introduced a destabilizing new normal to global politics,” Rhodes explains in his book. “Laws and norms were for the weak, and the strong could do anything they wanted.”
Obama reportedly also called Trump a “madman” and a “racist, sexist pig.” Edward-Isaac Dovere, who is a staff writer at The Atlantic, wrote in his book, “Battle for the Soul: Inside the Democrats’ Campaigns to Defeat Trump,” that Obama called Trump a “f***ing lunatic” and “corrupt motherf***er.” That expletive allegedly was supposedly uttered after Trump held phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin with no aides on the line.
Obama was late to the campaign trail for President Biden, but he made sure to attack Trump when he could: “And with Joe and Kamala at the helm you’re not going to have to think about the crazy things they said every day. And that’s worth a lot. You’re not going to have to argue about them every day. It just won’t be so exhausting.”
