Left-wing animal rights extremists initiated a so-called “blockade” against McDonald’s four distribution centers in the U.K. this weekend and vowed to keep the “blockade” going for at least 24 hours, with the goal being to convince McDonald’s to give up meat.
In a press release published Saturday, the animal rights extremist group Animal Rebellion said the so-called “protests” were designed to engender “economic disruption to the McDonald’s supply chain” as a wake-up call to the “animal agriculture industry.”
“Animal Rebellion, a mass movement using nonviolent civil disobedience to call for a sustainable plant-based food system, is demanding that McDonald’s becomes fully plant-based by 2025. However, they say McDonald’s is just a symbol of the system they are trying to change, which is the entire animal agriculture industry,” it read.
BREAKING NEWS (pls share!). Around 50 Animal Rebellion activists are *right now* blockading @McDonaldsUK entire UK distribution network to its 1300 UK restaurants for its role in the climate emergency, #Amazon deforestation, and animal suffering. The press release also drew attention to the alleged threat of climate change.
“The meat and dairy industry is destroying our planet: causing huge amounts of rainforest deforestation, emitting immense quantities of greenhouse gases and killing billions of animals each year,” a statement from a spokesperson read.
“The only sustainable and realistic way to feed ten billion people is with a plant-based food system. Organic, free-range and ‘sustainable’ animal-based options simply aren’t good enough.”

Animal Rebellion claimed its “blockades” would affect 1,300 restaurants that combined serve an estimated 3.5 million customers per day.
In a statement to the Associated Press, a spokesperson for the fast food chain neither confirmed nor denied this allegation and said only that it’s assessing the impact of “the disruption” and wishes to apologize “for any disappointment caused” to customers.
UPDATE: COVENTRY BLOCKADE REBEL.
“This feels like absolutely the right thing to do. We’re in the middle of a climate and ecological emergency but we’re eating huge amounts of meat. It’s unsustainable.” Well said! 🙏💚🌍🐮@McDonaldsUK we’re waiting for your reply. #plantbased pic.twitter.com/uxmkplOCjm

However, McDonald’s apology may not even be necessary. If you pull up any of Animal Rebellion’s tweets and take a look at the replies, you’ll find multitudes of people slamming the organization for trying to shove its ideology down others’ throats.
Look:
It will change things. It will piss off everyone that doesn’t want a plant based food, who wants freedom of choice. It will harm their movement, and galvanize most people against them. But it won’t change things in the way that they want.

@BBCNews @amnesty @TheSun The last time a people were forced to follow a certain doctrine was in Nazi Germany. What makes these people think they have the right to dictate how others should live? (The key word is ‘dictate’ as in dictator’.)

What happened to freedom of choice? I’m a farmer’s daughter. I choose to eat meat, but I fully respect your choice not to. Please afford us the same respect, not to mention the people whose work you’re disrupting.

I absolutely support people’s right to choose a plant based diet, but forcing your choices and beliefs on others is not the way forwards. There’s no positive action here, this will only harm your cause. Choose to educate people on the benefits, not attempt to force an issue.

You’ll also find a lot of mockery as well.

Will spare you no thought when I tuck into my Ribeye Steak and Chips tonight. Also have a leg of lamb in my fridge for my Sun dinner tomorrow, doing my bit for British farming

The point is that the public doesn’t seem to blame McDonald’s for what’s happening, in part because Animal Rebellion is making sure to let angry customers know that they’re the ones truly responsible.
Case in point:
It was Animal Rebellion but glad to hear it worked! https://t.co/lbZNP0OQwn

That’s certainly one way to build a fan base …
As of Sunday afternoon, it wasn’t clear how many of the “blockades” were still ongoing. At least one of the “blockades” had for sure ended, and judging by the tweet below, some of the “protesters” had wound up in jail:
Update from Hemel Hempstead: Harley speaks about how the Hemel Hempstead site lasted 21 hours and people are currently doing police station support for those in custody.#McDestruction #PlantBasedFoodSystem #AnimalRebellion pic.twitter.com/ByfDuPaiEv

It’s not clear what was on the menu for Sunday at the local jail, though chances are the dining options included meat.
