Megyn Kelly lays the smackdown on Rachel Maddow for fretting over ‘threat’ of maskless Americans

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow commented that she would have to “rewire” herself to not see unmasked individuals as a threat in response to new CDC guidelines for vaccinated individuals. Journalist Megyn Kelly mocked her response immediately via Twitter: “Thoughts and prayers for her during this difficult time.”

“I feel like I’m going to have to rewire myself so that when I see someone out in the world who’s not wearing a mask, I don’t instantly think, ‘You are a threat,’” Maddow commented. “Or you are selfish or you are a Covid denier and you definitely haven’t been vaccinated. I mean, we’re going to have to rewire the way that we look at each other.”

Maddow admonished Americans to give each other space to process their “feelings” about the shift in “norms” over the new mask guidance. She ominously predicted that there would be a “visceral reaction.”

Earlier in the show, Maddow interviewed CDC Director Rochelle Walensky about the new mask guidelines. She haltingly asked her, “How sure are you? Because this is a really big change.” Walensky assured her they were sure and touted the “extraordinary amount of evidence” showing the efficacy of getting vaccinated.

Kelly’s well-placed sarcasm comes as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are saying that if you are vaccinated you can ditch wearing a mask and resume a normal life.

But that news was followed by a number of media personalities declaring that they did not trust the new guidelines or those who are not still wearing masks.

Broadcast journalist Soledad O’Brien tweeted: “I might wear a mask on a plane. Caught swine flu years ago from the sick guy next to me on a long flight and I will be happy to avoid the flu and other stuff in years ahead.”

MSNBC’s Joy Reid replied to that tweet saying: “Caught whooping cough on a flight a couple years ago. Masks on flights could be SOP for me for a good while.” And then added: “And I trust the science and am happy to listen to the CDC. You know who I don’t trust? All the unvaccinated, anti-masker, covid-denying Tuckers who’ve been flouting the scientific guidance for a year and are walking around possibly spewing the virus. Masks = protection from them.”

Reid also said last month that she was too scared to not wear a mask and would instead wear two of them while jogging in the park to protect against “backdraft” from other joggers.

“The Root’s” Michael Harriot joined the club: “I’mma still wear my mask. I don’t f**k with y’all like that.”

CBS anchor Gayle King said on Thursday that she felt “judged” in New York for not wearing a mask outdoors, even though she’s been fully vaccinated. Research has shown, whether you are wearing a mask or not, that outdoor transmission of the virus is extremely unlikely.

Meanwhile, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said: “It’s about damn time” in response to the announcement by the CDC.

Satire site The Babylon Bee won the day with the apropos quip via Twitter: “With Pandemic Ending, People Who Yell At Others To Wear Masks In Danger Of Never Feeling Important Again.”
