While House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is condemning the rocket attacks against Israel launched by Hamas, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Squad are instead condemning the Jewish state and calling them terrorists. This exposes a deep rift in the Democratic Party over the issue.
Pelosi harshly criticized the “indiscriminate” rocket attacks launched out of Gaza at Israel and bluntly proclaimed that Tel Aviv has the right to “defend herself against this assault.” Dozens have perished in recent days during the attacks on both sides.
“Every civilian death is a tragedy that we mourn,” the Speaker declared in a statement. “Hamas’s accelerating violence only risks killing more civilians, including innocent Palestinians.”
However, she also tried to blame both sides claiming that “recent inflammatory provocations including extremist forces in Jerusalem have exacerbated the situation, and restraint must be shown by all to de-escalate the crisis.”
Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and fellow Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) both laid the blame for the conflict at Israel’s feet because they retaliated with airstrikes that allegedly left at least ten Palestinian children dead.

Ocasio-Cortez went on to attack Andrew Yang, who is a New York City mayoral candidate and a fellow Democrat. She excoriated him for planning to attend a since-canceled Islamic event after issuing a statement that supports Israel.
“Utterly shameful for Yang to try to show up to an Eid event after sending out a chest-thumping statement of support for a strike killing 9 children, especially after his silence as Al-Aqsa was attacked,” Ocasio-Cortez angrily tweeted. “But then to try that in Astoria? During Ramadan?! They will let you know.”

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan for Muslims. Yang had planned to attend an event in Queens on Wednesday to mark the religious holiday during a grocery distribution according to The Hill. He was reportedly informed that the organizers of the event didn’t want him there and he replied: “We were happy to oblige by their wishes.”
Evidently, Yang believes the disinvite was connected to a tweet he made on Monday that stated: “I’m standing with the people of Israel who are coming under bombardment attacks, and condemn the Hamas terrorists. The people of NYC will always stand with our brothers and sisters in Israel who face down terrorism and persevere.”

Omar tweeted on Tuesday: “Palestinian children deserve advocates for their humanity, safety and security. No exceptions.” She called Israel’s airstrikes as an “act of terrorism.”

Democratic New York State Representative Dov Hikind excoriated her for her stance in a bluntly worded tweet: “AND WHAT DO WE SEE IN THIS VIDEO, YOU DISINGENUOUS FAKER OF A ‘HUMANITARIAN’? HUH? Squad member Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) called for President Biden to take action against Israel and for the Jewish state to be defunded by the United States.

Senator Bernie Sanders spoke out against the ongoing violence and condemned both sides: “Israeli children should not have to spend the night scared in bomb shelters, as many are doing tonight. Palestinian children should not have to grow up under the constant violence and oppression of occupation, as so many do, and have done,” he commented on Twitter.
Sanders is demanding that the U.S. call for an immediate ceasefire and to end “provocative and illegal settlement activity.”
Senator Elizabeth Warren called the proposed Palestinian evictions “abhorrent and unacceptable.”
The U.S. State Department also chimed in over the evictions: “We are deeply concerned about the potential eviction of Palestinian families in the Silwan neighborhood and in Sheikh Jarrah, many of whom have lived in their homes for generations,” Jalina Porter, who is a department spokesperson, remarked during a briefing.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) tweeted his support of Israel: “Israel unequivocally has the right to defend itself & its people, & I condemn today’s unjustifiable attacks by Hamas against innocent civilians. Israelis & Palestinians both deserve a future of peace & security, & I hope both sides take positive steps to promote that end.”
