James Golden accepts ‘Lee Greenwood Patriot Award’ on behalf of Rush Limbaugh in an emotional speech

Longtime Rush Limbaugh producer and call screener James “Bo Snerdley” Golden accepted the “Lee Greenwood Patriot Award” on behalf of his late friend and talk radio legend Friday evening at a gala in Palm Beach, Fla., to honor wounded U.S. military veterans.

The emotional moments rounded out an evening that began with a rousing speech by former President Donald J. Trump in the ballroom of his Mar-a-Lago estate. Trump was one of six award recipients to include former football great Jack Brewer, Conservative filmmakers Sam and Kevin Sorbo, and president of the College of the Ozarks Dr. Jerry Davis.

Golden, who is now the host of his own weekly talk show on New York City’s WABC, spoke emotionally about Limbaugh, whom he teamed with for the entire 30-plus years of the conservative talker’s highly successful syndicated radio career, as he accepted the “Lee Greenwood Patriot Award” in his honor.

Golden opened his remarks by noting that “in January, one of the greatest presidents that the United States has ever had left office” — a tribute to fellow Florida resident and former President Donald Trump — before noting further that Limbaugh passed away just a few weeks later, after a year-long bout with lung cancer.

Calling Limbaugh “the greatest broadcaster,” Golden said he has “left his office and returned his talent to the God that had given it to him,” to loud applause.

Golden then turned his attention briefly to President Joe Biden’s short but tumultuous tenure in office, which has been marred by a border crisis and inflationary pressures.

“It’s barely been 100 days and already you see chaos on the southern border. You see the energy crisis skyrocketing and not talked about,” boomed Golden.

“You see what is supposed to be a booming job market with a million jobs, not producing. And you see the president that gave America the biggest economic boom in its history being vilified by those who want America’s destruction,” he said.

He pivoted back to Limbaugh in a touching remembrance of the man whom he has called one of the most giving he has ever known.

“I miss Rush every day of my life,” he said, as the crowd erupted into cheers again. “I miss his commentary. I miss his humor. I miss the fun. Most of all, I miss my boss and I miss my friend.”

The WABC talker used his reverence of Limbaugh to segue back to the purpose of the event: To honor America’s men and women who have served the country in uniform and have paid a physical and mental price for it.

“And this very generous man, who always gave what he could to help members of our military who have sacrificed the most for our freedoms and our liberties,” Golden said.

“And you are the real heroes tonight,” he continued, adding that during Limbaugh’s decades on the air “we would have members of the military call in and express their gratitude to Rush and he would sometimes be near tears because he said he didn’t know what to say because you are the heroes.

“And ladies and gentlemen, those of you who have sacrificed so much for this country who are here in this room tonight, you are America’s heroes, you are America’s pride,” Golden added.

“You are America’s defenders… you are America’s heart. And all of America loves and appreciates what you do. God bless you so much and thank you,” he said to new cheers.

As he prepared to conclude his remarks, Golden then turned to Greenwood, a highly-acclaimed country music singer-songwriter commonly known for one of the most patriotic anthems in American culture, “God Bless the U.S.A.”

“I want to say a word to Lee (Greenwood) before I leave. In the almost three centuries of American history, there are four songs… only four. Only four that most Americans call our Americana, our songs,” said Golden.

“‘My Country ’tis of Thee,’ ‘God Bless America,’ the ‘Star-Spangled Banner’… what’s the fourth one?” Golden asked, as members of the audience began to shout the title of Greenwood’s tune.

“Lee Greenwood, you have made history by honoring your country and you’ve given us pride. I thank you for what you do for this country and for so many. Thank you all and God bless you,” Golden said.
