On Friday, left-wing comedian Bill Maher slammed members of the “woke” left for having turned into moral scolds.
Granted, he did it while still taking numerous potshots at Republicans. In fact, the segment began with a potshot aimed at Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz.
“New rule: Republicans can’t spend decades chastising liberals for being too permissive about sex and drugs, and then be completely silent about Matt Gaetz,” he said, referencing the Florida lawmaker’s ongoing alleged sex scandal.
“Republicans cannot be the conservative, stick-up-your-a** party and then take our drugs and [have sex with] our women. American government works best like a mullet: Republicans do business in the front, Democrats party in the back,” he added.
He then went on to list a number of Republicans who’ve been accused of engaging in lascivious/questionable behavior and contrasted this with the more disciplined behavior of past Republicans, including former President Richard Nixon, who was responsible for launching the “war on drugs,” and former first lady Nancy Reagan, who was famous for telling children to “just say no.”

“We could always count on Republicans to be the fuddy duddies, the wet blankets, the bores. They were the moral majority, the book of virtues. Nixon started the War on Drugs, and this lady never stopped spitting her catchphrase about it,” he said right before playing a clip of Reagan repeating her “just say no” mantra.
“Her husband had a commission to root out pornography. If it was fun, Republicans were against it. They got apoplectic over Clinton getting a blowjob. They invented abstinence-only education. Mitt Romney has never seen himself naked. John Ashcroft, I’m not kidding, once covered the [breasts] on a statue,” the host continued.
He added that Rick Santorum wears a sweater vest and then read a quote from former House Speaker Newt Gingrich who, in 1989, had slammed the Democrat Party for its embrace of everything that’s questionable.
“The left-wing Democrats will represent the party of total hedonism, total exhibitionism, total bizarreness, total weirdness, and the total right to cripple innocent people in the name of letting hooligans loose,” he’d said.
The problem, according to Maher, is that there’s been a role reversal, with the “freaks,” as he called them, now being Republicans like Gaetz and even Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, whom some claim is involved in a polyamorous relationship, and the wokescolds now being his liberal Democrat peers.
“We need to restore the natural order of things. I don’t want to live in a world where liberals are the uptight ones and conservatives do drugs and get laid. Once upon a time, the right were the ones offended by everything. They were the party of speech codes and blacklists and moral panics and demanding some TV show had to go,” Maher said.
“Well, now that’s us. We’re the fun-suckers now. We suck the fun out of everything: Halloween, the Oscars, childhood, Twitter, comedy. It’s like woke kids on campus decided to be all the worst parts of a Southern Baptist, and that’s wrong. Because it’s cultural appropriation,” he added.
It’s true that members of the left have become severe wokescolds, though unlike the “wokescolds” of the Republican Party, whose scolding was rooted in religious and family values, the scolding of the left is rooted more-so in Marxist ideas like critical theory.
That’s why people are constantly being “cancelled” for using the wrong pronouns, opposing Black Lives Matter, standing up for basic principles/values, etc.

Contemporary liberal scolding also appears to be rooted in authoritarianism, ergo all the videos of presumably far-left “Karens” harassing people who refuse to wear a coronavirus mask.
“If Democrats had always policed morality as hard as they do now, they would be down a lot of heroes — no FDR, JFK, RFK, LBJ, Clinton, Martin Luther King. Democrats are now the party that can’t tell the difference between Anthony Weiner and Al Franken,” Maher continued.
“Or Katie Hill, up-and-coming Democrat congresswoman from California now resigned, who, like Ashli Babbitt, was found to be in a throuple and pictured holding a bong. Quite the opposite. This should be our logo. We’re the throuple people, the bong people, the tantric sex people!”
“It’s time to switch back, because frankly, you’re not good at being us, and being you sucks,” he added as the segment concluded.
Ironically, the segment prompted scolding and rants from liberal Twitter users, some of whom accused him of “bending toward trumpism,” despite the majority of the segment containing insults directed at Republicans.
Why is holding people accountable more now than we did back then, a bad thing? Don’t we want society to be better than generations before?

Bill. Once my favorite purveyor of truth. Now just a cranky old dude who despises SJWs. Soon he’ll be talking to a chair.

Bill lost his mojo. He’s just a boring old curmudgeon now, bending toward trumpism. My family used to look forward to Friday nights & the show. Now I forget he even exists until I see these sorry tweets.
