Bowing to repeated pressure and calls for his resignation, Lamar County Democratic Party Chairman Gary O’Connor has officially submitted his resignation after calling Republican Senator Tim Scott an “oreo” following his rebuttal to President Biden’s address to Congress.
Multiple state leaders demanded that O’Connor step down following his “disgusting” racial slur posted on Facebook. That post has since been deleted.
“I am deeply and sincerely sorry for my inappropriate and hurtful use of the racist term I used to describe Sen. Tim Scott on my personal Facebook page. It was insensitive, and I have embarrassed myself and my party by its use,” O’Connor said to the Washington Examiner Tuesday morning.
“As a result, I feel compelled to offer my resignation as chair of the Lamar County Democratic Party for consideration by the County Executive Committee,” he stated.

“Oreo” is a defamatory slang term used to describe a black person who is perceived as pretending to be white.
“I had hoped that Scott might show some common sense, but it seems clear he is little more than an oreo with no real principles,” O’Connor wrote on Facebook.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott nailed the Democrat for the slur: “This is disgusting, hateful, and completely unacceptable. O’Connor must apologize to @SenatorTimScott & step down immediately,” Abbott tweeted on Saturday. “@texasdemocrats censure him.”
Texas House Rep. Pat Fallon also issued a statement demanding that O’Connor resign: “Gary O’Connor’s comment against Senator Tim Scott is abhorrent, insulting, and unforgivable. Both he and the entire Lamar County Democratic Party should be ashamed of this racist behavior. O’Connor must apologize and step down immediately. Additionally, I call on both the Democratic Party of Texas and the NAACP to condemn these words, and the state party should take swift action to censure him. This kind of behavior is not tolerable in Texas, the United States, or any political party.”
O’Connor was only one of numerous Democrats who used racist terms against Scott following his rebuttal. “Uncle Tim” trended on Twitter last week and after more than 11 hours it was finally taken down. But the offensive tweets that disparaged Scott are still in place and live on the social media platform.
Ironically, Scott made clear on Wednesday in his speech that we are not a racist nation: “Hear me clearly: America is not a racist country.” He adamantly spoke in defense of Georgia’s election integrity law, which has been criticized by Democrats as disenfranchising black voters. The attacks in the media and the Democratic Party are still ongoing.
“I’m an African American who has voted in the South all my life,” Scott proclaimed. “I take voting rights personally. Republicans support making it easier to vote and harder to cheat.”
“It is really saddening to see that what the left is doing is fighting bigotry with bigotry,” Scott commented to Sean Hannity. “They have exposed their hypocrisy and their true motivation,” he noted.
“It has nothing to do with ending prejudice. It has everything to do with claiming or getting more power. I have never seen such power grab and using people in such a despicable way,” Scott remarked.
