House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) responded Tuesday to allegations made by Fox News host Tucker Carlson Monday night, confirming that he did rent a room from liberal pollster Frank Luntz in Washington, D.C.
“I didn’t know how this was controversial,” McCarthy proclaimed on “Fox and Friends.” “Frank has been a friend of mine for more than 30 years. I met him with Newt Gingrich back when they were working on the Contract with America,” he noted. Luntz is reportedly the registered owner of four apartments in the Penn Quarter building. It is unclear which one of the apartments McCarthy was living in.
McCarthy continued by confusingly stating: “Democrats took over, they started changing the House around.” He added: “And so, yes, I’ve rented a room from Frank for a couple of months but don’t worry, I’m back to — going back to where I normally am, on my couch in my office,” he declared. “But, yes, we pay fair market rate.” It should be noted that no proof of that statement has been forthcoming yet.
Carlson insinuated during his show that McCarthy might be violating House ethics rules by “living with a lobbyist for Google.” McCarthy contends that Luntz is not a lobbyist as Carlson claims. But considering the fact that Luntz has decided he can no longer be a Republican and his decidedly liberal stance on a number of political issues, his rooming with McCarthy is considered suspect by conservatives.

“Why do Republican officials listen more carefully to Frank Luntz than they do their own voters?” Carlson asked his audience. He also claimed that the closeness between Luntz and McCarthy gives the pollster an “outsized influence over the Republican Party’s policy positions.”
“Well, Frank’s not a lobbyist. Frank’s a friend I knew 15 years before I ever got in and I just rented a room for a few months there. So I don’t see that there’s any problem along that line,” McCarthy defensively responded. “But I’d like to see everybody stay together. Let’s work to make sure we put people back to work, back to health, back to school. Stop this woke movement that’s going on.”
McCarthy is reportedly one of the wealthiest members of Congress and he is a strong supporter of former President Trump. Luntz allegedly ranks among the most wealthy and powerful pollsters in the nation. He has attacked both Democrats and Republicans including the former president.
Recently, Luntz posited, based on his polling that was supposedly conducted among U.S. voters, that former President Trump is now seen as “a genuine villain.” He also stunningly predicted that “there isn’t even a shred of hope for him if he should ever try to reenter politics.”
McCarthy just visited Trump at Mar-a-Lago and is voicing support for the former president’s supporters in his caucus.
Carlson appears to be taking no prisoners and is conducting his own version of cleaning out the swamp by exposing leadership in D.C. regardless of party affiliation.

“And he seems upset. I think he and Tucker must dislike each other, and I don’t think that’s right,” McCarthy commented concerning Luntz. “They need to get together and solve whatever difficulties because we’ve got to make sure that we put this country back on the right track. We have — we’re so successful under President Trump, and what President Biden is doing today — the last thing we want to do is be fighting among ourselves.”
